Kids these days are really spoilt ?

I have an employee who just graduated from high school and is turning 18 this weekend.

Her parents bought her a brand new car costing ~24-25 OTD price (all paid cash by parents). Atleast, she is paying for her insurance herself.

She also gets a Brand new cell phone worth ~500.

for her 18th B'day, she wants to go to a nightclub with her friends and yada, yada...and oh, she drinks...

Are kids really spoilt these days or I am just old-fashioned at ~25yrs ??

I think it depends more on the family. Also, gap between 18 and 25 is not that significant, "gramps". Shouldn't this be in the Love and Relationships Forum?

Yeah, as one member said. Its ever generation to the next. When I graduated my parents gave me a car. Nothing fancy, just a 1997 Ford pickup, but I did a lot of work for them remodeling their house and such. Maybe she is the only child so they spend everything on her?

I got nothing to drive growing up, but my little brother(19) got my parents to co-sign & pick up the insurance on a 25k sports car. The kid has never held a job & has a drinking problem. Already he is falling behind payments, & daddy is picking up the slack. He's been in two accidents & just had his license suspended. That doesn't stop him from letting his friends drive him around(in his own car). I wonder who'll drive him home in a couple hours, when he's half sober.

Meanwhile, I'd like to find an affordable air conditioner for this sweltering basement rental.

Her high school GPA is ~2.X (probably ~2.5 or so). Atleast she is planning to go to a community college for GED after the partying in summer gets over.

I went straight to college in summer after graduating from high school...no parties for me my parents made me work hard..lol...and they still do

she has a brother also who has tons of tickets on his driving record...and b/c of that, her insurance is high (family insurance thing)

I think you can seperate the parents buying her stuff from the parents letting her fail at school. i have friends that are very successful individuals who could be considered spoiled since they still lived on their parents dime all through college and got new cars and such. depending on the financial situation of the parents, buying t heir children nice things isn't so bad as long as the kids are still responsible and hard working individuals

my parents paid for my college and got me my first cars but again, i was and still am responsible. I will not go and waste my $$$ on something that I dont need. Yes, I will occasionally eat out and drive a nicer car now but dont go to clubs, parties etc. etc.

I would say that its good if the parents can afford and the child is responsible but in the case of this girl, I dont think that the parents know that she goes to clubs or she smokes and drinks. Again, its none of my business on how she wishes to spend her $$$.

Today, she was talking about going to a club for her 18th b'day where a VIP room costs ~500-600. Its not a big $$$ amount for me today but I could have never thought about spending that much during my high school days for few hours.

ah well..i guess this is what they call generation gap perhaps, i am old-fashioned.

What's wrong w/ going to clubs, parties, etc? How exactly is that not responsible? Granted, this girls idea of going to clubs, and parties and dropping $500 on a VIP room is ridiculous I think. But other than that, I think you're over generalizing.

But yeah, I hate spoiled people.. who don't seem to appreciate what their parents give them. I blame part of that on the parenting though. It's fine to give your kids more than you had, but if they go around flaunting it and not making anything for themselves.. well.. that's just sad.

kids are spoiled. too many parents are married to the kids and not to each other.

kids are spoiled. too many parents are married to the kids and not to each other.

Heh. Never had it put that way before. But an interesting thought!

I never had my own TV, phone, or car growing up. But that's not to say I wasn't spoiled. I was. But I would say most of it was being spoiled by opportunity. My parents paid for flying lessons for 3 years, private school, college. Since the age of 15 I was able to travel to Europe on my own. Education was the first priority.

So what? I was never spoiled like that growing up, but Im not bitter when I hear these kinds of things. My gf's parents bought her a TSX when she graduated from college. Great for her. Hell, if my parents wanted to buy me a new car for graduating college, I wouldnt stop them.

If she graduated from HS, she won't be getting a GED from community college. An associates' degree, maybe.

Yeah, some kids these days are really spoiled. But it's always been that way.
