Kids Pick Kerry to Be the Next President

NEW YORK - Kid power! Democrat John Kerry (news - web sites) is the winner, and the rest of the country should pay attention because the vote on Nickelodeon's Web site has correctly chosen the president of the United States in the past four elections.

Nearly 400,000 children and teens voted, and the results were released Wednesday. Kerry received 57 percent of the vote; President Bush (news - web sites) got 43 percent.

Nickelodeon has been airing information on the Nov. 2 election, plus sponsoring debates where kids could put forth their views on the environment, the war in Iraq (news - web sites) and terrorism. Some animated shows on the cable channel also have been focusing on the election.

Linda Ellerbee, who writes and hosts "Nick News," says their voting usually reflects their parents' views ? but not all the time.

"Every so often you get a kid that says, `My parents are voting for X, but I'm voting for Y,'" she said. "It's amazing, the point when kids start forming their own ideas about issues."

Ellerbee said Nickelodeon has been traveling the country teaching about the election and the importance of being socially informed. Seven-year-old Anthony Viggiano of Baldwin, N.Y., won a contest for the best song lyrics about freedom of speech and performed it with rocker John Mellencamp (news).

"If we can get kids interested earlier in voting, when they can legally vote, they will," she said. "They will run for office, they will be the candidates (that) people want to vote for."

Ellerbee, who will announce the results on "U-PICK Live" Wednesday night, said many children wonder why they can't vote in the real election.

"Kids aren't dumb, they're just younger and shorter," she said. "In fact, last election, a boy came up to me and said, `We picked George Bush (news - web sites) to win, and he didn't really win. Al Gore (news - web sites) won the popular vote, so we were kinda wrong.' Quite an observation."

wow, never saw nickelodeon when I was a kid, but good job trying to get the kids interested in politics early and showing them how our country runs.

It's more of a prediction than a point. I've seen many posts about groups coming out against Bush. The responses are always something like, "well professors don't know about the real world so they don't know what they're talking about." Or, "Democrats are lazy, crack whores, etc (search if you don't believe me). Hence my prediction is that we'll see Repugs come in and crap on the majority on the children. Happy?

Hmm. When I was in 5th grade in 1996, I remember our class of 23 doing a mock vote. All 23 voted for Clinton over Dole.

In 9th grade, 85% of students voted for Gore over Bush.

Odd, isn't it?

Maybe it's cuz Nickelodeon under-polled the kids who only use cell phones

Wait a second. The vote on the web site has correctly chosen the president in the "past four elections"? Nickelodeon has had a web site since 1988?

When I was in 12th grade AP government, I remember around a 55-45 Gore advantage over Bush in a 60 student AP class. This was very close to the national polls. Gore had the advantage among the girls. I asked my sister who is now in 12th grade government what the class poll is, and its a hugely in favor of Kerry. Funny how that changes.

That's what I was thinking, but I guess they're just talking about the kid's pick being right the last 4 elections in a confusing way. I remember calling in and voting for Bush Sr. back in '88. When he won the kid's poll, they brought out a pizza to declare the winner, and his name was spelled out with pepperoni 🙂

It really doesn't surprise me that children pick the more liberal candidate. Kids are idealistic. The liberal candidate says that if he's elected, nobody will ever get sick, everybody will have all the money they need, there will be no more poverty or hunger or sicknes. Life under a liberal is utopia. As people get older they become more realistic. They realize that making choices have to be made, and that you can't have everything. Conservatives tend to be more of this mindset.

Finally, if kids were able to make rational decisions, we wouldn't keep them at home for 18 years. If kids understood the world, we'd turn them loose when they could walk. So while kids voting for president in school is cute, and a tool to teach them about democracy, it's hardly a way to gauge anything.

Really? Never heard a liberal candidate say that.

Who cares, the little boogers can't vote! 🙂 j/k

But, nice post anyway. 🙂

Actually, I consider this to be just about the kiss of death for Bush, and I'm not kidding. If a president can't fool the kids, how can he fool the adults? (Don't answer that, I might get scared. 🙂 )

Forgotten the war on poverty? In anycase, I bet I could sway just about every 13-16 year old I know by saying that Kerry is in support of gaydom.

Then I would explain Cheney's daughter is a lesbian and that Bush was a cheerleader.

Hmmm, so what was the bit about Christopher Reeve being alive and walking, if not for Bush? That sounds like a guarantee of immortality to me.

If only Kerry were president! Sickness would be a thing of the past!

So you're disregarding that they were correct for the last four elections, and two of those presidents were Republicans? Explain how this means that kids will pick the more liberal candidate.
I'm sick and tired of hearing the "as people get older they become conservative" tripe.

in my poly sci book it actually shows them getting more liberal as they get older. The most conservative group of people i have ever been around was my class in highschool. They (me included, at the time) sounded like a bunch of rabid fascists.

Let's take national security. Conservatives are more juvenile. They think everything can be solved by fighting and don't see things form other people's perspectives. They think more in black and white. This is more childish.

Maybe it's because these kids have psycho Socialist drivel aimed at them every day in school. Teachers are something like 75%+ Democrat, who do you think they are going to push? It is funny that as people age, and move further from this brainwashing that occurs during their formative years, they are more likely to vote Republican.

Why do you think this?
