My sons pc has been giving us issues. I noticed some buldging caps on the mobo. I removed the video card (8800gts320) and used the onboard. RTW2 installed and played but very choppy.

I'm going tomorrow to buy a new mobo. My question is will his setup with new mobo run RTW2 without all the chopping?

setup...

amd x2 250
2 x 2g ddr2 pc800
evga 8800gts 320

Looking at this mobo in stock at a local microcenter. thoughts?

GA-78LMT-S2P Socket AM3+ 760G mATX AMD Motherboard

I'm going to say no. You might slide by with the lowest settings, its been so long since I've tried lower settings I don't know how well they scale. Rome Total war 2 is very CPU hungry and likes GPU muscle as well. That choppiness you're experiencing is probably very low framerates.

What rez is he playing at? very low settings and a lower rez might get him by. I can see RT 2 swallowing that 320 vram in a hurry though.

Well I couldn't get a mobo for his ddr2. So I ended up getting a fx 4130, gigabyte 78lmt-usb3, and 4 gig ddr3. I have to use the 8800 gts for a while. I hope this will get his game running decent till we get a better video card.

Can ya give me ideas on what video card? Good but cheap. Thanks for the help.

650 TI or a 660. Under 150$ if you look around

Try craigslist. I see those used for 75-100$ often. If you have microcenter check their open box area.

This is the board I bought for my HTPC. Your old Athlon x2 250 will work in that board since its AM3. I am using an Athlon x3 455 with the 4th core unlocked(!) and 4 gigs of ddr3. HD playback is great.

for cheap I saw a GTX260 sp216 for $25. New? A 650 TI Boost would work fine. 660 would be sweet.

Don't go rushing out to buy a card. If you can disable some graphics settings (AA and shadows come to mind) the game might run better without you throwing money at it.

How would a xfx 7950 black edition do for my needs. It's a fresh from Rma, guy wants 150$. Good deal?

great deal and powerful card.. Make sure you get a warrenty as XFX made the worst 7950 card. There is a reason it was RMA'd. Would not attempt to OC it

Glad to see you scored a quad cpu, Totar War will make heavy use of this. The video card offerings by the other members look like nice choices depending opon what you want directX 10 vs directx11.

A good bang for buck if you're buying used is the 4601gb, but if you can afford a better card, that's even better.

You've probably already done this, but if not, make sure you're running the latest patches as the game should have optimized a good amount since launch.
