Kids have Xbox One but also want PS4 Slim...worth it?

We got the kids an Xbox One a year and a half ago and they've been pretty happy with it. But they traded in their Wii U and games and have a bunch of credit now at GameStop burning a hole in their pockets.

After a visit to their cousins, they want to get a PS4 Slim as well (mainly for a few specific titles and possible the VR headset). GS has a bundle for $250 that includes Uncharted 4 and a $25 store gift card. Is this a worthwhile system to get? We also have an old PS3 so they'd have to sell or trade that as well if they want the PS4. Thanks!

Honestly, kids won't care about the Pro. This is coming from an PS4Pro and XB1 owner. Games are generally cheaper for XB1 in the used market and on XB Gold. But as you know, once kids want something you get it if they earned it and if you can afford it. At that point, it is worth $250, but they also won't care if you can get it used at GameStop. Decision is yours.

By the way one of the best things about the XB1 is the great split screen support. On 2 player Minecraft, I saw one play off the XB1 off the big TV and the other play off a Win10 tablet. It was not online multiplayer, but some sort of local 2 player off two different screens... they even can use the tablet as a screen for the XB1 through game streaming. I believe the PS4 does this as well.

I'm sure they would rather have the PS4 Pro, but looks like it's $400 vs $225 (after factoring the gift card) for the PS4 Slim 🙂

Probably ok just to have "only" the Xbox One system though. In my eyes, it's like iOS vs Android...pick whichever ecosystem you prefer.

Tell them you will sell the xbox one if they want you to buy the ps4. See how much they want that ps4 after that.

Kind of, but there are certain games that you can't get on one vs the other. Plus maybe their friends got a PS4 and they want to play together. That's really the biggest factor IMO, the number of friends who you can connect with on the system you choose.

You should pick whichever has games you will play. That is all that really matters. If the console has no games they will play then it's a waste of money.

What are they thinking with the Nintendo Switch on the Horizon? If they wanted that, they probably should have waited to trade the Wii U then. Gamestop seems to actually give pretty fair trade in value when a new system comes out. Otherwise they only seem to give pennies on the dollar.

I personally think the PS4 is worth getting just for The Last of Us, though I don't know how old your kids are. If I was a father I probably wouldn't want my kids playing that game until they were say 14, as the game is very violent and dark (no sex though). But if you play it on normal or higher difficulty it's a great stealth game, it's a really good third person shooter with excellent control, and in my 30+ years of gaming it's possibly the most memorable story I have ever played through (though Bioshock Infinite is right up there too). And graphically it's beautiful plus it runs at a pretty clean 60 fps on my PS4 Slim. I had extremely high expectations for the game since it was so hugely hyped, but I thought it nailed and even surpassed those expectations. I feel it's one of those rare masterpieces, like Half Life 2 or Zelda A Link to the Past. The Left Behind DLC that comes with the PS4 version of the game is also really interesting in fleshing out the Ellie character a bit more. It's going to be a long couple of years waiting for the sequel that just got announced earlier this month.

I think the main questions to ask are what games are not on the xb1 that they want the PS4 for or how many friends play on PS4 and not xb1? That's the only way it's justified IMO.

The one thing to consider is that if you have both, multiple people can game at the same time e if you have multiple TV's.
