Maybe Thought Industry from Kalamazoo? Wouldn't describe them as power metal and their first album was released in 1992, but can't think of anything else from Michigan that could fit the bill.
OK, so I got the genre sub-types wrong. It was punk/grindcore/speed/death metal:

Repulsion (band)

And how did the intro for Pull Me Under not get accused of being a slightly altered rip-off of the intro for One by Metallica?

After watching this, I realized (based on the Sycamore shirt worn by the bass player), that these kids are all local to me, here in Loveland (Cincinnati), Ohio. Here's a link to the music school's owner's youtube channel. He has his kids playing all kinds, but my favorites were the Prog/Metal covers. Pantera, Iron Maiden, KsE, A7x, GnR..... pretty impressed.

You know how I know you'll grow up to be a nerd? When you cover dream theater songs at age 11.

I'm a better guitar player than 99% of the players I meet.

I attribute that to finding Dream Theater at a young age, and wanting to be like them. By chasing their skills, I think I flew right past the skillsets of most musicians.

So much LaBrie hate... I think his vocals work great with the music. I met him a couple years ago and complimented him on his vocals on the covers disc from BC&SL. Stargazer sounds great.

Those kids were pretty good. I was happy to see they played the full version and not the video edit.

Maybe not Pantera, but Dream Theater, Iron Maiden, and a lot of heavy metal has strong nerd appeal. The cool kids listen to hip-hop and dubstep.

If you like DT but don't like LaBrie, listen to their side band Liquid Tension Experiment which is 100% instrumental.
