They did a fine job with that.
Ideally, the fuel chamber will have no airspace in it. Oxygen + flammable liquid strapped to your back + a flame coming back through the nozzle = bad news.

Zombie apocalypse? They're ready.

I bet if he put enough pressure into it, the thing would blow without a spark...

He should pressurize it with a tank of N2 or something.

Neat toy. At least he diddn't fill it with sterno or napalm hehe.

That PVC is still pretty heavy, could have adapted an old propane tank or something - would probably be safer.

Whats wrong with the PTFE tape he used?

Nothing; it is all chemically identical. Thickness and color are the only difference.

This is the kind of things you do when you live on a farm, not in the middle of the city!

As a kid I often thought about putting diesel in my super soaker and taping a grill lighter to the front of it. I never did it, but I still do have that old water gun around here somewhere

I am actually working on a design for a flamethrower. It will be a little safer than this one though, as it will be used in the theatrical and film special effects world. I am planning on using a metal tank, possibly aluminum for weight, along with a small bottle pressurized gas such as nitrogen or CO2 to pressurize the tank. It will also have a valve that closes as soon as you let go of it, instead of the 1/4 turn valve used in this one, along with several other safety features. Ideally, it would be built to NFPA 160 standards, though I don't know if that will actually happen at this point.

Now if you want to have a little fun with say a 10ft flame, pick up a weed burner torch that runs of off propane, remove the small port from the nozzle of the burner by unscrewing it, and fire the burner up. If you really want to get a nice flame out of it, flip the propane tank upside down so you are spraying out liquid propane, not that I would recommend doing the liquid bit though.

Also, before anyone says anything about me doing these things, this is the type of stuff that I do for a living.

harder to fabricate though and much heavier. Also I am sure he is thinking metal detection on the tank. Disassembled this flamethrower doesn't look like much.

I somehow picture this kid running around one day a la Quake when you could set people on fire.

there was a guy that made one that threw something much more similar to napalm ... he used an old fire extinguisher as his tank and added some ingredients to gasoline to make it a bit more viscous and globby. His flamethrower would throw giant bouts of flame, but whatever he sprayed would be covered in burning goo for a while, more like a real flamethrower than this one that shoots the flame, but all the fuel is burned before it reaches a target.

The 'real' methods people use at home are mixing gas and styrofoam or soap flakes. Gas + Soap was what was originally used out in the field.

However; real napalm burns at a much higher temp.

One of those shots that kid is out in the middle of the Cul-de-sac lat night ighting off 20 some foot flames! I'd think that would be more than enough to get some negative attention from your friendly neighborhood watch!!

Pfft, don't you know flamethrowers are not ideal for killing zombies besides in unrealistic video games? I mean seriously, do you WANT a flaming zombie now? It won't be dead immediately and you have to deal with it running at you.. plus the big flame that will likely attract more zombies.

Man, I swear, sometimes you guys seem so unprepared for this

 i so wanted to use that as a quote. to long though. :( we really need support for like 500 char. sigs!
