Kid keeps getting sick, should I give him something to drink?

So, my kid is really sick. Gets sick to his stomach every 20 or 30 minutes. Should I give him water or something to dirnk? He throws up either way, I figure giving him something to drink gives him something to get sick with so he doesnt dry heave and also helps to keep from getting de hydrated...
Advice?

He does, but slight. Dr visit perhaps in the morn once they open. Might as well, only a 10 dollar co-pay 🙂
He's 2 and a half if that makes much difference.
Would ask wife, but she's sleeping the whole fam damily is sick
Wife
6 y/o daughter
2.5 y/o son
6 month old daughter (Although she's doing the best)

Me? Nope. I eat my Flintstones 🙂

Don't give him anything for at least a 1/2 hour, call the peditrician now and be sure to know how high his fever is when you call. Also be sure to tell the doc if there's been any pulling of the ears going on.

Hold off on the food for 4 hours after the last episode of vomiting. Then clear liquids to full liquids (soup/milk etc), soft food, then solid food.

I keep a supply of phenergan suppositories my doctor gives me for just such a problem, saves him an emergency call & keeps my kiddos bearable when they're puking😀

When this happened to me a while back, we called the doctor, he said to start off with like, icecubes...see if you can hold that moisture down...then move up from there.

I say don't give him anything yet - even small things can encourage his stomach to throw up again. If he calms down, I'd say give him some flat ginger ale (just shake it up to get rid of the carbonation).

ohoh sounds like something I had in S. Africa - dehydrated within 3-4 hrs to the point that they put an infusion.

Anyway just water didnt help, but try some Cola and add a little salt

give Tea (pepermint, better yet camomille) also add a little salt

Please tell me that if he hasn't improved you've taken him in to see the doctor! My little one had a gastrointestinal virus recently... it's not something to mess around with. It is also exhausting to care for children when they are sick. Hope you are resting when you can.

Anyway, I hope he is better and that you will give us an update when you can.

a little ginger ale is good and maybe try to feed him some crackers after a while. Sometimes that will help settle the stomach. Sounds like a typical stomach virus. A trip to the doc is always advised, but usually you will be told to ride it out. Make sure you ask the doc for the signs of dehydration.

With kids in school I usually go through this once every couple of months. Parents just refuse to let thier kids stay at home. Rather than take a sick day to watch thier child, they send them to school and infect everyone.

Oh and make sure you wash your hands as much as you can, or you will be doing the heaving soon.

Oooohhh, lucky me!
the ice chips worked, AND found some Pedialyt Icesicles in the freezer.
Its all downhill from here baby. 🙂

Thanks again guys and gals!

Be very careful. The symptoms of severe, life threatening dehydration are often the same sympotoms that lead to it.

I know, I've been there a few times due to stomach illnesses I've had. It's scary, because you can't hold water down, yet water is what you need. The funny thing is, you're not even thirsty.

Three times in my life I've ended up in the hospital because of severe dehydration caused by stomach flus or fevers.

What's with all these calls for Ginger Ale. Soda is not good for little kids. it isn't even good for big kids.

Because it's a well known fact that both ginger root and lightly carbonated drinks help soothe nausea. That's why ginger ale is such a popular remedy, and has been for generations. Carbonation is not bad for you. Excess sugar may be bad for you, but I doubt the amounts a nauseous person consumes when they are sick is consequential.

Even small amounts of warm cola can help because of the carbonation.

for dehydration i always go w/ pedialyte. i like the electrolytes w/ minimum sugar approach.

It does no good if the child cannot keep the pedialyte down. Ask any doctor what a good remedy for nausea is, and ginger will come up.

And what is the point of minimizing the sugar intake of a sick child who can't keep food or water down? Sugar is absorbed quickly, and may be the only energy absorbed before the child throws up again.

Why have people taken the knowledge that excess sugar is bad, and turned it into ALL sugar is bad? It is not. As with everything else, it is just fine in moderation.

Glad to hear that you found a temporary remedy.

I can't stand it when my kids get sick especially my little angel, I feel helpless and I would gladly be sick in their place.
