In today's economy people are paying their way to relocate to another job.

Hopefully you have a backup plan. I know some that have been out of work 3+ years now.

I can't afford to move halfway across the country to a state with a higher cost of living and get a place on the same salary. I can't afford a place here.

My backup plan is to work here until I find another job or the final layoff happens. If I don't have a job by then, the I'll go on unemployment and continue to look for another job.

That is, unless your risk profile is only met by low interest, FDIC-insured accounts.

And these days he won't live off of unemployment for a short time. Benefits just keep coming. If Congress is going to keep giving money away, he's perfectly reasonable to not move across the country on his own dime for a job that might not pay any more (and is in a higher COL area).

Sure, they keep extending the benefits but in many states you've got no hope of actually surviving off of unemployment. In my state the maximum benefit is just over $1k a month.

Reminds me of my friends who didn't get jobs for 1-2 years after graduating. The thing is nowadays most families that are not white American are not first generation. So it's not a struggle. Before, if you were the first in your family to go to college or the first to learn English, you had to bust your ass. Now it's a case where even if you're a minority, often times your parents or grandparents were born here and they already "made it." Parents who let their kids move in after graduating so they can take their merry time finding the "perfect" job should really share the blame too. And of course it's not just a minority thing. It's even worse for people who have been here for multiple generations. They too are secure and rich enough to let their college kids live at home.

Yeah, but did it even say what his degree is in? It's one thing to wait for the "right" job, but what if you have an extremely generic degree that provides no real experience in much of anything?

Negotiate. If they were considering paying you 60k before, I believe you can probably get at min 45k. Maybe 50k if you can talk. There is no harm in negotiation, if they won't budge you can always accept.

The problem with your argument is the fact that he majored in Political Science and minored in History. Both of which have zilch to do with any of his career aspirations.

How so? Those degrees are the general prerequisite for a career as a Corrupt Career Politician. Although, he really should have been in law school, instead of sitting on his bum for two years.

You do realize the total yearly compensation (not just salary, but total of salary and "benefits") for Federal Senators is the equivalent to 2 millions dollars pre-tax. And that is before adding in bribes and kickbacks. Those guys are SO underpaid.

The moment you start working from home; keep track of every penny that you spend on the home, communication and work support costs.

Also; make sure that you have something in writing that you are to be working from home.

Not as good as a 1099; but you may have the ability to save a few $$ on your taxes.

I know PLENTY of "graduates" who had to settle for some $10/h job without health insurance - regardless of their papers or formal education. I have seen software engineers and other people doing the most low level jobs.
Simply because they didnt find another "adequate" job. But they did it because they had to pay their fricking bills.

All of them would have taken such a $40k job with open arms.

My brother had graduate degree holders willing to pack boxes for $10/hr here in Palm Beach. So many people out of work now.

Your first job is critical...it's a proven fact. Even taking another job later for less money is proven to really hurt you in the long run.

Food on the table is the important thing. This guy didn't worry about that. I'd have turned down the job too at that level of pay if I didn't require it.

That said, we really fucked ourselved when wives started to work. Having 1+ kids at home with adult jobs will fuck us more. Soon the middle class will be communal living based.
