Really? In the US? If this was the case then there are a lot of little fringe groups running around violating the law. You are confusing so called "hate crimes" with "hate speech". So are you advocating blind acceptance of court rulings and interpretations of the First Amendment that seemingly fly in the face of the plain and unequivocal language it is written in? The Supreme Court's final say is only as good as the last case brought before it on any particular issue. If this were not so then rulings such as Dred Scott v. Sandford or Plessy v. Ferguson would still be the law of the land. I find nothing absurd in defending the rights acknowledged in the 1st amendment even if it is not always in fashion.

Wrong. Unless such speech is likely to result in imminent lawless action, it's entirely legal as a First Amendment right. I'm not advocating anything. I'm simply putting forth the reality of free speech, freedom of the press, and freedom of assembly in this country. We can debate it back and forth till we're both blue in the face, but it won't change the outcome if either of us walks into a crowded theater and starts screaming "fire!!"
