They're eating up fleet sales too. Rental car companies buy them. I think customer brand perception is the only thing that keeps them buying Japanese and American cars.
I also think Japanese cars are generally better and more reliable. One can agree with Consumer Reports of not, but in their ratings, American brands rank toward the bottom in almost every category.

Edit: At least American brands used to have a price advantage, but that has pretty much disappeared as well. Obviously it statistically proves nothing, but after consciously buying American and having generally poor to absolutely awful reliability, I switched to Japanese makes, and every car I have bought since has been solid.

Supposedly all the major brands are up to par from what I've been told... personally, I just don't buy that. And what real measurement do you have anymore?

I see a shit ton more of plastic parts that are highly prone to breaking on certain brands than others.

This chart of average costs of maintenance seems like what I would expect at a general glance of "Yup, definitely see why that one is on top" and "Yup, I can see why that brand is on the low end"

I'm fairly certain that for the rest of my life I will 100% stick with Toyota/Lexus, and Honda/Acura. Which on that note, I am curious why Acura is #11 vs. Honda being #27.... My Acura TSX literally uses the exact same parts from the Honda lol.

That's right. Not all plastics are created equal and even US manufacturers (GM/Ford) buy parts from smaller companies that make bad parts. UV Ray's destroy plastic. I have seen 5 year old steering wheels dryrot.

Don't Acuras sometimes have more electronic doodads in them?
Don't Acuras generally have a slightly more tuned version of the engine compared to Hondas with similar platform?
Honda also includes economical misers like the Fit and base model Civics which seem to cost next to nothing to maintain. I dont believe there are comparable Acura's to "bring down the average."

I'm not sure if there really is that big of a maintenance gap between Honda and Acuras, i suspect, its more of the demographics .... bigger cars cost more to maintain, and there are mor smaller/cheaper hondas, and more bigger/more expensive acuras .....

Just out of curiosity Zeze, did you ever end up getting the Palisade? I am very much considering it for a replacement to my wifes 2012 highlander. Seems like a great car for the money. Nervous that its the first iteration as there is no maintenance history, but not nervous enough to deter me.

It's been out for almost 2 years now. I'm assuming you've browsed kia/hyundai forums for any issues?

You might want to check this out: Palisade odor issues (not sure if the Telluride has the same issues)

It is very nice, but just too big and expensive (no matter how good the value) for me.

Also, I was under the impression from multiple reviews that the Telluride is the better vehicle overall even at the same price point.

It is but supply/demand issues and markups cause the Telluride to go for much higher than palisades.

It also looks like Kia dealers are expecting high demand for the 2021 sorento as while not officially live on Kias website they are on lots and go for MSRP or higher right now. The sorento hybrid hasn’t hit lots yet though. Just the LX to SX models.

Working with a dealer to place what will be one of the first Sorento Hybrids orders.

Remember maintenance costs assume all work is done at the dealership. One would expect the Acura dealership "experience" to be more expensive than Honda.

Not a shocker with the chip shortage. The telluride is leading the pack of above MSRP markups. Currently the National avg price for a Telluride is 19% above MSRP. When I bought my Sorento I could have gotten one for 10% above MSRP. Still glad I bought my Sorento Hybrid when I did. W

I test-drove it last year. They've been selling like hotcakes for 18 months straight. It's a brilliant design overall; Kia means business these days! Same deal with their luxury sports car. I haven't test-driven the newer 4-cylinder Stinger, but their 6-cylinder was a beast, I was seriously impressed with it:

SUV-wise, I test-drove a Subaru Ascent & there's no comparison to the Telluride, Kia's big-boy SUV is SO much better! Still wish their Minivan was offered in AWD, but they probably don't want it eating into the Telluride sales. They really hit a homerun with the Telluride!

I was driving home & passed by a Kia dealership, so I decided to pop in to go for a test drive. Thoughts:

1. They said they had the only Telluride available to test-drive left in the state. Apparently they are selling like crazy & most dealers are price-gouging, both of which are unusual for a Kia. The dealer I stopped at was only selling at MSRP, zero negotiation, with a 4 to 6-week lead time. No custom orders at the time - they could only get what the factory sent them!

2. My only complaint was that the initial acceleration was slow. It had plenty of power after it "woke up", but there was a delay in the accelerator. I didn't remember to put it into sport mode or whatever to see if that resolved the issue. Their 8-speed transmission is plenty smooth, unless like FCA's. 291HP on all models, V6. No real complaints other than it wasn't snappy off the line or when you wanted to punch it. I don't know if that's a comfort-mode thing or a transmission thing. I'll have to check it out again sometime to see if there's a button to push to get better throttle response.

3. Driver's seat felt like I was driving an RV...big, comfortable, relaxing. Easy to drive. Surprisingly way less body roll around corners than I was expecting. It had the same bobsled feeling that the Stinger had...like it was a coffin box for your legs. This felt much wider than the Stinger's driver seat, but still had that left & right-side boxy feeling going on. It did not bother my legs, however (my knees bump in most cars, which is super annoying).

4. Interior space is ridiculous. I'm 6' tall and could fit my fingertip to wrist above my head. The 7-seater had captain's chairs in the middle...I had PLENTY of legroom! The back seats were also functional for adult human beings - I wouldn't want to spend a long drive in them, but my head didn't bump!

5. I would 100% take this over the Honda Pilot or Ford Explorer, no contest. It's a fantastic vehicle.

6. I think it kind of compares with the Tahoe, although it feels more compact for some reason. But much bigger than my wife's Forester. The Forester is pretty zippy & easy to pop in & get around in. The Telluride definitely feels more like a cruiser.

7. All of the seats fold down easily, and fold flat. I LOVE flat! You can get in & out of the back seat SUPER easily because of their motion system. Very smartly designed out. If you have kids, pets, or need to move a lot of people on a regular basis, this is the next best option after a minivan. Side note, I really wish their Sedona minivan was offered in AWD!

8. Their top-end green is SUPER ugly. It looks like metallic baby poop. Not a fan. I also don't like the design of the black rims that go with it at all. I actually don't like most of their rim options very much at all.

9. The front grill is definitely the central focus of the design. It's a very nice-looking SUV overall. The grill works with some colors, but not with others...it worked well on the dark gray model.

10. Overall, I am extremely impressed with it. Kia has a homerun on their hands; they really knocked it out of the park. The price is reasonable for what you get. I like a lot of things more than other competing mid-sized SUV's. If I needed a car that large, this would be the one I would choose!

They decontented the Sorento slightly as well to not fully compete with the Telluride.

I really liked the Telluride slightly more than my Sorento but not enough to pay $15k more than my Sorento Hybrid I’d have to pay now.. I think I made the right choice for me. 38-40 vs 21-22 mpg also didn’t hurt. The looks of the Sorento have also grown on me as well. It’s more sporty and aggressive looking as well as less rotund, especially in the back.

I just wish they didn’t leave the SX trim to the upcoming PHEV Sorento.
