Keyboard... sweet idea,

Hey, they have a topic "sort of" like this at slashdot, about almost touch-free keyboards. Me and a prof at my college were throwin around this idea:
using light responsive diode's to make a keyboard. where they respong to changes in light. so... say you had a glass plate, and you just typed slightly over it... didn't have to actualy touch anything, cuz the diode's would react to the change in light... he showed me this big(shoe box sized) piece of equipment that did this sort of. what do you guys think? get them really sensitive and you could have multipule layers of keyboards so, say at 1 inch you had keyboard #1, at 2 inches away you had keyboard #2 and so on.... or does this just sound like a crack head idea?

That'd be nifty at first, but I like the feel of the keys, that way I know the letter I hit will produce a letter. Without that feel, you could be accidently hitting keys left and right

Good idea, but I don't think it would work in practice. With no need to touch the keys, just "pass your finger over it" would result in many unwanted "keystrokes" as your fingers pass over a key to hit the one above/below it. "A" for effort, though! 🙂

I dont think id like typing in air, but lower it just a tad where you had to touch the glass, that would be extremely cool. a KB with no moving parts and would last forever.

OMG! You could spill your beer on it!

I just think it'd just take some getting used to.... took me awhile to get used to my split KB, took me awhile to get used to my palm KB, and my laptop KB...

but, i do like the idea of being able to spill my beer on my KB....
ohhhh
laptops... just fold em open, nothin to get dirty. 2 flat surfaces....

A better idea is something I saw on "Beyond 2000" about 15 years ago (maybe longer).... Does anyone else remember that show? Anyway, at the "home keys" there were little "boxes" you put your fingers in. THe boxes were made up of a small switch under your finger, and the sides were little switches to all sides. Basically, you stuck your fingers in the boxes, and tried to type as you would on a QWERTY keyboard, and your fingers would hit the walls fo the box in the right place (as your finger would only travel in one driection to hit a certain key), and it would produce a letter. THe effect was that you typed like normal, but will VERY little movement of your fingers, and no impact. SPEEEEEEEED. They had a working prototype, and the guy was just BLAZING AWAY on it. Amazing.

The only problem there is, if you're like me, and you can type 120 WPM, but INCORRECTLY, this thing would slow you down big time, as you would have to "re-learn" how to type the proper way. I basically type with a total of about 6 fingers and my two thumbs, all over the keyboard. It seems more natural to me that way, and itwould definitely not work on this keyboard.
