Keyboard problems

Hey,
I have an external keyboard/mouse that I have hooked up to 2 different laptops. Since there is only 1 port, I had to get a y-cable. One salesperson told me that only 1 device would work at a time. Another store told me it'd be no problemo. Finally, I bought the device, and it works. Here's the catch:

Sometimes it will seem that the CTRL key is being held down. All of a sudden hitting W will close your window on you! Sometimes everything becomes highlited, other times everything will be written in CAPS. When you press caps lock, everything comes out lower case. Still other times pressing 2 will give you @.

Just hoping that someone knows what's going on here. Should I just use one device at a time? Is there any way to fix this? Or is my keyboard as good as garbage?

Thanks in advance!

Possible dirty / damaged keyboard. Sometimes my old keyboard would act as if the Windows or Alt buttons were pressed when they weren't. Try a different keyboard, see if that helps.
