Keyboard not found error...

I have been using the Logitech MX5000 keyboard and mouse set up for about 2 or 3 years with no problems on my home build PC that is about 5 years old at this point. I went into my home office yesterday morning and found that my computer had rebooted in the middle of the night and was at the bios screen with a "keyboard not found" error. Went through the troubleshooting steps to re-synch the keyboard with the USB adapter that is plugged into my computer and it will not connect. Tried swapping out batteries and changing to multiple USB ports but no dice.

So I went and bought a new Logitech USB keyboard and am still getting the same error message at boot up. There was a bit of an electrical storm that blew in out of nowhere during the night that it rebooted but my PC is plugged into a surge protector that is plugged into a battery backup so I don't know if the storm is a coincidence or not.

Any ideas on what could be causing my motherboard to not detect any USB keyboard present? I have a PS2 port on the computer but have not been able to find any PS2 keyboard connectors to try it out.

Thanks!

Sounds like your USB port got zapped. Does anything work on that port?

Try different ports. You may hev to install a PCI or Express card with USB ports.

You can find a USB>PS2 adapter in most any decent Radio Shack.

yeah i keep a ps/2 keyboard on hand just because working in the bios or before windows startup can be tricky with a usb keyboard. i have even done installs with usb keyboards that i had to stop at select partition stage to restart with a ps/2 keyboard because suddenly the usb wasn't working....

Thanks for the suggestions everybody! I am truly vexed now. Found a USB/PS2 adapter and tried it on all 6 of my USB ports on the PC and no dice. The bios gets to the POST screen and it sees the processor, RAM and all of the drives but still with the "Keyboard not found error".

Thoughts?

Yep, tried 2 different keyboards one of which was brand new out of the box and still no dice.

unfortunately, as was stated abive, sounds like your ports were fried. can you get a cheap ps2 keyboard anywhere? then once you log on you can test the ports by plugging in another usb device.
