I value a strong base and most of the keyboards out there are incredibly flimsy, loaded with unwanted keys, and I've never been into the ergonomic craze (flex, curved, split, etc.).

So, after considerable research I decided on the Cherry G80-3000 model in black. I think I'll be very happy for many years to come. That dinovo Edge seems cheesy. I view keyboards as more of a commodity, but I value function over form (read: quality/utility is more important than looks). That Gigabyte model is nicely designed. Too bad it has to be so butt-ugly! :p

Should I get a g80-3000? It says its membrane something and not mechanical?

Does anyone know where to buy Cherry products in the US or someone who will ship here at a reasonable cost?

That model definitely uses mechanical switches. :)

Looks like Cherry makes a gaming keyboard that addresses all your gamer's issues. Too bad it's not sold in the U.S. You might be able to order it through the UK. I guess it depends on how bad you want it.

oh yeah I have been keeping my eye on it. The only problem I see with that keyboard is availability in the US as you mention , and cost. They also have a chaper K2 which doesnt use the same switch and is known to be rather poor :(

I like how they have a 82 key version, those things actually look better to me than the full sized ones :D

Try one of these...

I also highly recommend the original IBM Model M13 in black. If you can find one of these and unless you're sensitive to the clicky-key noise, you'll never go back. I was fortunate enough to stumble across two new ones in storage. :)

LOL those are.... awesome?

Well, I got my keyboard (finally) last week after I was told after the fact that it was backordered. Unfortunately, I don't need a chinese keyboard (LOL) and made them take it back. It's plain indeed, but those keys are solid. I'll have to get used to that "click" of the keys, but it's nowhere near as loud as those old IBM models. The company said they'd overnight the correct "english only" model as soon as they received the "misship". What an ordeal! Hopefully, I won't need a keyboard for another seven years.

I've got a Saitek Eclipse II, and it's light, thin, durable, and the extended corners prevent it from sliding off of whatever I lean it on.

I need a compact keyboard and was looking at:

Cherry G84-4100
BTC 6100C
Apple's wireless keyboard

I don't know anything about the BTC's keys, but it has decent reviews and only costs ~$25.
The Cherry of course is well reviewed, and I guess this compact model is just as nice. ~$65
Apple's wireless seems cool, don't know how well the bluetooth will work for me. ~$80

Deck also has their compact keyboard...backlit is nice, but it's a hefty $120.

Any suggestions/experiences will be much appreciated! Number pads throw the ergonomics off on my setup....compact boards are absolutely necessary for me.

according to this link, some of us may like cherry browns better, myself included. Where in the us can you find filco keyboards at a reasonable price?

edit: ouch, so filcos are quite pricey too, much like anything from japan. another link here, that keytronics might be more competitively priced for a cheapass like me :)

I really like deck's 82key design, but they only use cherry gold (linear mechanical) and do not offer custom keyboards built with different switches. the quest continues...

Discovered the BTC 6100C a few months ago and really like it. It's small, has a good feel and it's small (important to me...). I have six now with a couple arriving today. Everytime I find a suitable kbd, it gets discontinued - last one was a viewsonic 10191 - a modern version of the original xt kbd.

Recently sampled a hyper. xt layout, ok key action but additional keys to the left of the space bar.

Last year, I sampled the creative gamer kbd. Excellent key action - maybe the nicest since the original xt. Backlighting sucked. Cartoonish look with logos and, again, additional/odd keys to the left and right of the space key. newegg doesn't carry this anymore - must have failed.

Bottom line is that since a kbd is so subjective, you're going to go through a few before you find the best one.

after a bit more research, I think this is the best one I could find that meets all my critria:
Diatec Majestouch Tenkeyless English Keyboard Black N-Key Rollover Brown (FKBN87M/EB)

- Cherry MX "brown axis" (nearly impossible to find in the US) switches
- Full n-key rollover
- Minimal footprint for better portability

personally I think it looks way better than either steelpad or K-1 or whatever else. Price looks very competitive compared to the two afformentioned modelsl. All I need to do now is just wait till it comes back in stock (if ever) :(

I like the looks of this. Simple and no extra 'convenience' keys.

Post back if it can be found at an easy-to-order place. I would probably order 2-4 of them.

Hi Everyone, my name is Nathan and i am a keyboard junkie. And even worse is i'm a keyboard junkie living in Australia. Yep thats right, there is no where to get any of these keyboards. If you are lucky to get one, you have to mail away for it and hope it gets to your house in a months time :(, hardly sympathetic times for a junkie :p.
I would love to try all the keyboards in this thread. Right now i have the DiNovo Edge, the new and old G15, and some other assorted ones. I think i have enjoyed the Edge the most, but would be so much better if they managed to get a number pad on there somewhere. Keep the recommendations coming....

diNovo Edge is SIIIIIICK! I can't believe I spilled soda on mine and killed it lol. I feel you on the lack of number pad. I used the standalone number pad from my original diNovo with my Edge. Didn't look the same, but it worked. I can't imagine how much good keyboards cost you in AUS. It pained me to pay $250 for my original diNovo. Right now my Razer Tarantula is the tops though.

Nato78, why don't you take advantage of living in Europe and try Raptor K-1?

I'm chomping at the bit to get that new MS Sidewinder keyboard when it comes out. I can't seem to find a release date anywhere (ranging from this month to sometime at the end of March!?!?).

He is right. Everything else about Australia is great, just there lack of good keyboards haha. Maybe i just need to take a holiday and come over to somewhere in USA or Europe and get some that way.
