Keyboard issue in Linux Mandrake

It hasn´t been long since I installed Linux for the first time, so maybe I still ignore certain things about this operating system.

After trying five different distributions, I stayed with Mandrake: easy to install and latin-american keyboard layout support!. I have set up three different boxes with this distro, and all of them have the same problem: the X system doesn´t recognize 'AltGr' key, so I´m unable to use certain characters. The three keyboards have latin-american layout of keys (standard latin HP, Microsoft Internet Pro, Compaq with Internet Keys). This issue is very annoying, I just can´t type neither the symbol "@" (located on the "Q" key) nor "\" (key next to "zero/equal" key) Just imagine what I have to do to write an e-mail!

When I boot to console it works well, but as soon as I start X-Windowing system, all my 'AltGr' chars are gone away... and the 'AltGr' key works the same as 'Alt'

I´ve been reading a How-To on setting up keyboards, but damn! it´s too complicated for someone that is just escaping from M$-Windoze´s claws...

By the way, Mandrake is (as far as I know) the only distro with latin-american keyboard layout support.

Any suggestions??
