Keyboard Error in Win98se

I have a Win98se installation that crashes at boot.

Comes with an error that claims Keyboard Error can not initialize Keyboard.

1. Tried another Keyboard, same story.

1. Will boot into DOS with boot floppy, and Keyboard will work in DOS.

2. Does the same if trying safe mode.

3. I tried to put the hard drive in another computer with similar hardware configuration, same thing.

4. Microsoft Knowledge base mentions such an error, but attributes it to Faulty Keyboard.

I Spend hours on the Inernet did not find any answer.

I have important information on the Drive that will become useless if I reformat.

Any one has a solution? TIA.

Hmm, this is a shot in the dark, but maybe try booting in safe mode with prompts of each file loading, and then try and mark down which file is causing the error. Then from another Win98 installation, try porting over the offending file through DOS. I would recommend you make a ghost image of that drive/partitions to another disk if you can first.

Unfortunately this trouble seems so early in the game that it does not even boot into safe mode.

The boot log shows that the problem occurs when it is trying to load the Keyboard drivers, but it does not point to a specific file. I have an other computer with similar settings, and a hard drive tray. I put the drive with the faulty installation in it (as a secondary drive) and the system will see it as drive D: That allows me to access it and play with the files. I already copy few system files into the /windows/system directory to refresh it, however it does not help. Which mean that as yet I did not hit on the right files.

If any one knows what are the system?s files that are responsible for the keyboard drivers, please let me know.
