Key Stuck in Ignition

Hey ya'll

I just drove home today pulled into my garage and accidentally tried to pull the key out while the engine was still on. After turning the engine off i still can't pull they key out. It's stuck in the 1 (acessory) position. I can still turn the engine on but i just can't remove the key.

i drive a honda accord 2000 LX with automatic transmission

here's the thread on http://www.houston-imports.com/forums/showthread.php?t=304159

but i'm scared they might just be playing me for being a n00b

When the pins inside the lock mechanism get wore out, that is one of the things that happens. It happened to me once and a locksmith had to come and rekey the whole car. Costed about $120.

Try adjusting your shifter...happened to me once in the GTO, but not because I tried to pull the key out prematurely. Just try moving the shifter, steering wheel all while fiddling with the key. Don't be too forceful though.

Same thing kept happening to me. I went to a locksmith and he replaced the ignition in the parking lot....15 min and $45

i have the same car you have, and i thought my key got stuck. i just forgot to put the car into P and it was stuck in N or D when i turned the car off. make sure it's not something as simple as that.

If you've got the time and want to save some money...
Go to the parts store and pick up a chilton manual and a new ignition lock cylinder -this should also come with a key ($6 part). Also see if they'll let you rent a lock plate puller (tool that helps you pull the steering column apart.

transmissions in P, guess i'll get a mechanic to look at it tomorrow.
Take it out of park and then kind of "slam" it into Park. That will make sure that it's registered.

i'm not sure what i'm gonna do about this..it seems really expensive to go to a locksmith or even a mechanic. the honda dealership service said 86 dollars just for a diagnostic, most locksmiths around here seem to be charging 100+ just to remove the key.

In most honda/acura's you have to push the key in, then turn to get it out of the ignition.. did you try that?

did you try slamming the shifter into park? did you push in the key before rotating and pulling it out?

Follow this procedure exactly ;

Start the vehicle

Run the shifter through all the ranges

Apply brake and pot shifter in park

Push key inwards into cylinder and hold it there

Shut off ignition while still pushing inwards

Wiggle ignition back and forth in Off postion while attempting to remove key

Do this at least five times

If this does not work, P.M. me.

Is the key that is stuck in the ignition a copied key or an original?

At my hardware store we have stopped making copied automotive keys for Honda and Toyota I believe because we have had more than one instance where the key gets stuck in the ignition. I'm not sure if that is what the situation is with you but it sounds more commonplace than I would have expected.

slam it in park and move the wheel around a bit while having the foot on the break

same experiecne here, 96 accord though
