Without hearing the tape and their tone the idea that they were joking is certainly plausible, even likely. That being said, considering that Ryan swore them to secrecy and then they repeatedly lied about the exchange makes this look way more suspicious.

If there is a way to make something look much worse than it might actually be the GOP these days will doggedly find it. I saw some of the exchanges between the WaPo and their press guys. Amazingly incompetent.

Spokesperson's denied it for each, so I'm not sure what to draw from that.

Independently, I agree with your interpretation of the article. The comments were said with a lot of interjections of laughter and absolutely zero concrete evidence of anything.

I will say, more broadly, that it seems someone with a lot of dirt is launching a coordinated attack. That concerns me greatly.

To be clear, their spokespeople first lied and said it never occurred. Next, the Post came back and said they had a transcript. Then their spokespeople lied and claimed the transcript was wrong. Finally, the Post came back and said they had heard a recording, at which point the spokespeople admitted the story they had just twice denied was true but claimed it was a joke. This is not exactly the behavior of people with nothing to hide.

A lot could be learned from hearing the tone of these statements, I hope the recording is eventually released.

Given what appears to be the tone of the transcript I didn't get the impression Ryan was looking to cover up as much as he predicted the optics of such a conversation. As for the McCarthy comment, it's possible they were mentally in the same place as many Americans at the time... joking about the possibility of Russian connections hoping it was a joke. That being said Ryan is a weasel scumbag. At worst a traitor himself, at the least a corrupt, spineless, opportunistic, kiss-ass more than willing to sell his country's people out to line his pockets. He's gross regardless.

Hoping it's a joke? That was actually a glimpse of their private position. It's one of the reasons why Ryan was okay stonewalling everything. I can see many of these scumbags being okay with it.

Oh no doubt they had a win at all costs mentality and strategy and haven't been disturbed in the slightest while evidence began to surface but when that conversation was recorded I think they were more about keeping it local, not farming out the f*** the people... yet. imo

this is so damning...

So I actually got my OP wrong in this thread, it was Ryan and McCarthy's spokesmen who denied the WaPo's first attempt to get comment on this story. And now, after watching that video, we find out that they denied it twice before being old there was audio of it.

So while I think it's likely McCarthy was joking (he's also a well known moron, btw) and while I find it extremely difficult to believe there is a conspiracy among them to hide information about Trump's Russian connections, this lying does make it look more suspicious. More than likely, they're just congenital liars which of course comports with their behavior generally.

More than that - McCarthy makes the "joke" after serious discussion of Russia's activity in Ukraine and their ability to wage propaganda war.

I don't think McCarthy knew anything, but this is one of those "jokes" that reveals actual beliefs. That they suspect something like that and have continually stood in the way looking into it just shows how they see Trump as a necessary evil to rubber stamp their legislative agenda. It's

That does kind of sound like something Ryan would say, wow. I'd like to hear it.

Have to say, the general premise of this news and how it developed made me laugh out loud. 'That never happened! Oh you have it on tape? Uh, well, obviously it was just all joking.' Heh, that's hilarious.

Really validates my previous suspicion that the GOP might suddenly drop a Dump to get a more aware, more agenda cooperative Pence in office. And they'll probably act noble and patriotic about it when it's over.

This might not be popular, but it is possible this was said in jest, sort of like dinosaur farts caused their extinction.

I'm going to need more.

the problem is, even if it was a joke, it wouldn't be funny if it wasn't possible.

the comments right before, about Russia hacking the DNC and getting the opposition research on Trump and the "swear to God" comment make me think he wasn't completely joking.

I don't believe this. The level of malfeasance, even for GOP congressmen, is just off the charts.

Yeah I've had like 9 reactions like that in the last several months. At some point you just have to face that people with no shame excel at making others experience it.

Welcome to the party pal.

Well, the train is off the rails - that much is certain. The details of why it's off; well let's just say I'm glad there is now a special prosecutor.

Its only once source, and I dont know if its true:

http://shareblue.com/trump-has-not-...-since-the-day-after-he-briefed-the-russians/

You think it might be?

Not completely true - since clearly Trump listened to the briefing about the Israeli asset in ISIS. The intelligence agencies can't stop providing info to the president - so likely, Trump just doesn't care what they have to say. He probably is just relying on McMaster to alert him about anything pressing.

how is that not completely true?

the article clearly states that Trump has not received an intel briefing since the day after he met with the Russians, that is when he spilled the classified info related to Israel/ISIS.
