Kettlebell size to use?

What is the recommended kettlebell size for a male with average to above average strength?

I've never used KB's before. Ideally, I'd like to pick up a single bell that would allow me to do the most exercises, with the focus on conditioning and toning; not pure strength.

I've tried lifting 35 lbs and 45 lbs KBs in the store. The 45# felt too heavy and the 35# felt good. What size does ATH&F recommend? :)

Start with the lighter one and try some of the more advanced exercises after you master the basics. After 3-6 months, consider moving up a size. If you start out with too heavy of a weight, it might become more of a chore, less fun, less motivation to keep going.

Definitely start with the 35lb KB at the heaviest. With most people, I'd even suggest going lighter because using KBs requires some good form and practice. It depends on how many reps and what type of training you'll be doing (for power, cardio, etc?).

I completely disagree with linuxboy about timing though. You'll get stronger and more coordinated quickly. 3-6mo is far too long to wait if you're actually trying to improve your strength and power. When you feel good with the 35lbs, got some decent form, and churn out a couple weeks of good workouts with it, then you can move up.

Thanks you both for the info. I'm focusing on cardio with many reps versus strength with fewer reps, so the 35lb KB it is.
