ketchup is awesome

Ketchup by itself with fries or meatloaf is great.

Ketchup mixed with other things can be superb depending on the other ingredients; ketchup, mustard and mayo is a great mix for most BBQ'd red meat, add a little Worcestershire sauce and it's a good steak sauce.

It's all about personal preference though.

It's true, though. the reasoning is that sweetness/sugar is the most overwhelming taste that you experience. Ketchup is basically just sweet, which is what kids prefer to put on anything. Not so much because they prefer sweet, but because it actually takes 12 +/- years for the human tastebuds to actually mature.

The younger you are, the more dominant is your sweet profile, and everything else is very off-putting. Sour and bitter are especially bad (inherited signal from our tree-swinging, cave-humping ancestors that these tastes = poison).

So, ketchup is a ubiquitous condiment for children because there is a strong, developmental imperative to reject most other tastes. Typically, adults move away from this because as you age, you tend to appreciate other tastes and what never changes is that "sweet" will dominate everything in your palate.

ergo--malt vinegar is for French fries/potatoes. NEVER ketchup (...unless you are 12).

Don't hate the message--hate biology?

Of course, there are those that certainly prefer sweet over everything else. Either they just like it, they are wired that way, or never allowed themselves to try different things, because those childhood memories of "food taste bad!" stick with them, not realizing that these are the memories of an unrefined palate. For what it's worth, sweet is my least favorite taste.

that's not just a Chicago thing. Mustard is designed to accompany sausages. Not ketchup. It's food law.

lol. long before the US adopted the frankfurter as some national symbol, it was mustard only. And, in the early days of frankfurters (renamed Hot Dogs in WW1 because Germany became our enemies), it was mustard only.

The real marketing hype was created by Heinz, because they wanted to sell ketchup. Thus, anyone that puts this sugar shit on their hotdogs are sheeple buying into the Heinz message. :colbert:

I found a thin crust place I love, to the point where 3 times out of 4, I'd pick it over Lous or Ginos or any other deep dish place .. I dont think its NY style (its not greasy and foldable). I dunno what city/region the style came from, but its uber delicious.

When I was still living in Chicago, there was a rather good NY-style place called, ironically enough: Chi-town Pizza. It was under the Addison stop next to Wrigley field. It was great: about $2-3/ slice.

They closed up and the property was converted into yet another Cub-ticket-selling scam shop owned by the Cubs. ...Remember the scandal where the Cubs were buying up significant amounts of their own general sale tickets, then selling them through brokers at ridiculous markups? Yeah...pretty sure they are still doing it.

Last I recall, there was another Chi-Town pizza somewhere in Old Town. Don't remember which streets, but it was definitely Old Town. That was the only NY style that I knew of in the city. :\

Ill likely visit NYC some time with the woman and eat NYC pizza a couple of times. I would like to see UCB again (saw them a bunch of years ago in Chicago at the improv, but since they sorta have their own studio over in NYC now) Wouldn't mind also going to see a Daily show too ... I likes me some Jon Stewart.
