HAMPTON, Oct. 4 ? A confident John Kerry lead a part town hall meeting part panel discussion on embryonic stem cell research that coincides with a new television on the same topic.

A Kerry campaign spokesman says the ad will begin airing in the Granite State this week and then rotate among the top battleground states.

At Kerry?s side was both the former Governor of New Hampshire , Jeanne Shaheen, and actor Michael J. Fox, who has been an advocate for further stem cell research since he announced he has Parkinson?s disease a few years ago.

Fox told the crowd of 1,000 at Winnacunnet High School that Bush?s Aug. 2001 decision to limit the federal funding of stem cell research only to existing lines ?sent us in the wrong direction? in terms of funding cures for 100 million Americans ? and 600,000 New Hampshire residents -- suffering from certain diseases like Alzheimers, diabetes and Parkinson?s disease.

Kerry used this issue at a time when both candidates visit battleground states promoting domestic issues. While Kerry was on the Seacoast discussing stem cell research, President Bush was in Iowa signing the latest tax cut.

Polls have found that a majority of Americas favor stem cell research. Critics contend that there are significant ethical problems with using cell from unborn fetuses.

?Our president just doesn?t get it,? Kerry said. ?Faced with the facts, he just turns away. Time and time again, he proven that he?s stubborn, out of touch and unwilling to change course. But the fact is, this isn?t about politics or ideology ? it?s about how science can change lives,? Kerry said.

His trip was the third trip to the Granite State since January?s presidential primary and first in nearly two months. During the same two month period, Bush has been here three time, totaling over six New Hampshire trips since the primary.

Polls have suggested that New Hampshire is one of the top battleground states in the country. The latest two polls have Bush and Kerry tied.

The stem cell discussion Monday came the morning after a 1,500 person rally late Sunday night right after Kerry?s campaign plane landed at Pease International Tradeport in Newington .

In the new campaign ad, Kerry says, ?It?s time to lift the political barriers blocking the stem cell research.?

The Bush campaign plans to told a conference call later today in response.

Good to see this is getting the attention it deserves. And Michael J. Fox couldn't be a better endorser. 🙂

Nothing against Michael J Fox, but I wish celebrities would stay the hell out of politics.

* EDIT: Unless of course they are running for office. I wasn't thrilled to see Arnold running in Cali, but he has turned out better than I thought.

I just get sick of hearing celebs talk about politics. Unless they are willing to put their names on the ballot I really don't give a shizzle what they have to say.

Yeah, now I can't watch "Back to the Future" any more. 😉

Unless they have a dog in the fight.

And considering Michael J. Fox's fight against Parkinson's disease, I'd do whatever I could to bring medical research to the forefront of today's news and politics.

I dunno. I still don't like to see them out there mixing their cause with politics.

Is there something in the "rulebook" that says that celebrities give up their right to free speech once they become famous?

I generally don't either. Or mixing politics in with their performances (such as Bono). But, the objects of their work definitely benefit from their involvment. Just look at how the Bush White House is now entertaining the forgiving of debt for third-world countries. Bono was a key figure in getting the world's powers to consider it.

Perhaps Michael will do the same for stem cell research.

Why are they concentrating on 'Stem' cells ?

Shouldn't they be looking at both 'Stem' Cells and 'Seed' Cells ?

I'm not a big fan of people who are only motivated by issues that are personally expedient for themselves. I would be much more swayed if someone without a disease promoted it. It just appears personally motivated if you're afflicted with something that this may cure and you come out of the woodwork to promote it as a result of that illness. I like Fox, but I've never been much for this method of generating support for a cause, regardless of what the cause is.

Uh, Cyclo? Are you not aware that Michael J. Fox is actually suffering from Parkinson's disease?

No, but I get sick and tired of seeing them talk about it, then expect to be taken more serious than Joe Schmo just because they are celebs.

Ok, then don't listen. Like I said, they have the right to promote any cause they see fit.

Sure they do, but they don't have the right to be taken more seriously because they are celebs. Seriously.....anytime a celeb says something it is generally jumped all over by the media. Let Joe Shmoe say something about the need for....oh....say Sickle Cell Anemia research and see how well it gets covered.

Forgiving debt of the third world has been a major push of the Catholic Church for probably around a decade. The Pope worked exhaustively for it to be forgiven by 2000. I think there's a significant issue between this and arguing for stem cells, as one is a justice issue and the other is a moral issue.

Uh, I am, which is why I said that in the first place. Try reading it again. I find it much less convincing when people who have a personal motivation for one side of a political issue wage an argument for that side. The Pope has Parkinson's too, much worse than Fox's, yet he's against stem cell research. This, to me, is demonstrative of someone who is more interested in the principle of the situation than someone seeking an outcome to profit himself. I'm not saying one way or the other who I agree with, I'm just saying that pandering to benefit yourself is much less respectable than holding a truly principled position.

My family and I had a similiar event with Michael J Fox last week!!!
Look here :

Link 🙂

Oh, and btw, I was leaning towards Bush before my sister got involved in Stem Cell research. However, after further inspection, I feel the compassionate conservative agenda is nothing but smoke and mirrors, nothing but political pandering to the base. They could care less about people in wheelchairs or people with chronic illness, they are more concerned with getting votes from people that could never comprehend science and it's role in helping people.

I would be surprised if Michael J. Fox is a Kerry supporter because he's known in Hollywood as a pretty conservative guy. But this issue is very important to him and stem cell research could prove to be the magic potion for Parkinson's sufferers so I'm totally with him and Kerry on this even though I regard abortion as an ethical disaster.

CycloWizard: No one will push the agenda for a cure like someone who is suffering from the disease EXCEPT one person. That's the MOTHER of a child dead or dying from the disease. The money we are wasting in Iraq would be better spent on finding a cure for cystic fibrosis, for instance, which kills most young people before the age of 30. $200 billion would probably find a cure and save some of our best and brightest-people who might themselves produce symphonies, great works of art, or lead the nation. The losses from this war are enormous at so many levels.
