Kerry to Attend Daughter's Graduation

LOS ANGELES -- John Kerry, Democratic presidential candidate, was simply father of a graduate Wednesday.

Kerry planned to attend his daughter Alexandra's graduation from the American Film Institute Conservatory, part of the candidate's two-day trip to California that included a brief visit to pay his respects to the late Ronald Reagan.

Kerry suspended much of his campaign activities this week in deference to the former president, who died Saturday.

Alexandra Kerry, 30, is one of Kerry's two daughters from his first marriage to Julia Thorne. A younger daughter, Vanessa, is a medical student at Harvard.

Both daughters were with Kerry Tuesday evening when he attended a screening of Alexandra's 15-minute film, "The Last Full Measure." Her graduate project is about a 9-year-old girl trying to cope with her father's difficult return home from the Vietnam War.

Kerry is a decorated Vietnam veteran, but his daughter has said the movie is not autobiographical, despite the father-daughter relationship. The film was shown at the Cannes Film Festival last month.

Kerry told reporters on his campaign plane Tuesday that Alexandra, also a film and stage actress, was considering several job prospects, among them shadowing a movie director.

Following the screening, Kerry celebrated at a Los Angeles restaurant with his daughters and an invitation-only crowd that included actress Dana Delaney and actor Daniel Stern, who plays the father in Alexandra's film.

Thorne also attended both events but Kerry's wife, Teresa Heinz Kerry, was not present, having flown back to Washington on Tuesday to visit an ill friend.

Earlier Tuesday, Kerry took an impromptu, hourlong walk around the University of California, Los Angeles campus. What aides had described as "a quiet stroll" threw his Secret Service agents -- and the neighborhood -- into a frenzy.

Kerry was trailed by eight agents, eight reporters, three campaign staffers, four law enforcement vehicles and several local police motorcycles. The candidate shook hands, waved and greeted passers-by, many of whom were surprised to see a presidential candidate in their midst.

Kerry will make a return trip to California June 24 as Hollywood stars, including Barbra Streisand, Neil Diamond and Billy Crystal, perform at a fund-raising concert. The event had been scheduled June 7. A similar concert in New York, originally planned for Thursday, has been rescheduled for July 8.

*sigh* And liberals are flamed for supposedly thread capping with partisian attacks.

At least he's going to his daughter's graduation, unlike Bush. Nice to see someone cares about education.

Yeah so, and what's your point? There's alot of people that put off schooling till much later in life. Boy, look for any little thing to nitpick on for your partisian attacks, huh? 😉

Just an observation. I guess when you have a mother that's filthy rich you can be a 30 year old film student. That wouldn't work for most if us.

why is this news? perhaps if a prominent father neglects their daughters graduation it could be construed as news, but when one makes it, it seems odd to make a big deal about it.

How many attacks have been made on the Bush daughters? BTW, Jenna graduated at 22.

8 secret service agents, 4 local law enforcement vehicles, and several local politice motorcycles. How much did Kerry's attending cost the taxpayers and cause disruption to the lives of the local people?

The author is quoted as saying he threw the community into a 'frenzy'...

Maybe Bush was right in avoiding it?

Oh, and just to further discredit you.. Even JENNA BUSH did not attend her own graduation.. I guess George Bush should have attended regardless? Yeah, what a neglecting father.. Care to make up any more false information?

He didn't cost the taxpayers anything by going because those resourses would have been at his disposal if he went to mcdonalds instead. Thats the way it will be for him everyday, everywhere, atleast up until the election.

And creating a 'frenzy' goes with the territory as well. No doubt most people enjoyed the excitement, and told many friends about it as soon as they could find their cell phones.

I think bush didn't want to go because he didn't want to see protestors and hear jeering. Granted it must be a lot harder being a president than a candidate, particularly being a president that sucks really bad.

#1: Again, what the hell does age have to do with it? My god, grasp at any straw.
#2: I don't keep track of how many people have 'attacked' Bush's daughters. And if other people did, does that make it right for you? I guess you're mother never gave you the line 'if your friend jumped off a bridge, would you?'. It's so hilarious to me how many times your only defense is a spin of 'well they did it, so why can't I/we?"

Most likely a calculated move to help her dad not look so bad, but it didn't work, he still looks very bad.

"With advanced hands-on training offered through a 60-plus credit hour graduate Master of Fine Arts degree program, ". Shocking a post graduate degree at 30!

Such is the life of politics, especially now adays, they have to be protected. So if we go by your way:

How much does it cost for taxpayers to protect Bush on the campaign trail and how many lives does it inconvience?
How much did Ronald Reagans funeral cost us and how much did it inconvience others?

I am in no way saying that either of those should be bitched about either, just pointing out the hypocrisy you state, but with you we've all become accustomed to your hoof in mouth disease.

Is this the daughter that was photographed wearing the 'fun' see-through dress?

A 30-yo film school grad, well better later than never they say. I'm sure she was glad to have her dad at the graduation, despite all the personal hardship and sacrifice he had to make to be there.

If you were half are smart as you think you are, you would realize I was being ironic is asking how much it cost taxpayers.. because thats always what liberals ask when Bush does stuff like that.

Your Exit Strategy might have worked a lot better if not for that last sentence. Had to toss in a sweeping generalization/accusation, didn't ya? Name some names, link some posts please. I don't remember any, but maybe my memory is a little... selective.

Well the Bush Carrier landing comes to mind.. but given the inability to do boolean searches, I'm not sure I can find specific posts.. So, throw out what I said based on that, I don't care.. doesn't change the fact I was being sarcastic when I ripped the cost to taxpayers..

OK, fair enough. Though I'd have to assert that people from both sides of the aisle can agree that the carrier stint was a pretty gratuitous and expensive bit of grandstanding.

Personally, I thought it was pretty damn cool. 🙂
