kernal upgrade ?

I have ubuntu 5.04 for amd64/em64T
full install cd.

doing the uddates it shows me linux kernel version 2.6.10 on 386 needs to be upgraded to
2.6.10-34.5

I am a little confused as to the nomenclature here why would it not show it as an update to say linux kernel_amd64?

apparently they just use them interchangeably?
thx dan

If you installed the 32-bit version of Ubuntu you'll get a 32-bit kernel. If you installed the 64-bit version you should get a 64-bit one, what does 'uname -a' say without the update?

Linux ubuntu 2.6.10-5-386 #1 Tue Apr 5 12:12:40 UTC 2005 i686 GNU/Linux

well I ordered 2 cds from ubuntu the 5.04 for intel x86 and the 5.04 for amd64?
this install is the amd 64 maybe its not a true 64 bit os they have then?

I know they have a real 64-bit install, if you have a 32-bit one I can only assume that either your CDs are mislabled or you goofed. And from that uname you can't be running a 64-bit install, a 32-bit kernel can't run 64-bit binaries. Go ahead and run file on ls, I bet it's 32-bit for you as well.

$file /bin/ls
/bin/ls: ELF 64-bit LSB executable, Alpha (unofficial), version 1 (SYSV), for GNU/Linux 2.2.0, dynamically linked (uses shared libs), stripped

what me goof never😉

well, just a minute gonna go run uname -a command on live cd's and see what it gives me.

ok i just checked on live cd. It gives me a x86_64 on uname.

not sure how that happened except that i remember one cd rom player was having some kinda problem and kept getting bad installs at first. so was experimenting with each cd and each player...musta got them switched😱 on the final go around?
Well not unheard of, 5 hours sleep is a good night for a graveyard worker and looks like maybe I needed 6 hours that night.

well think I'll leave the 32 bit running till something gets fubared bad. and make the switch then, its running plenty fast now?.

thanks for the imput
