I want to update to the latest stable kernal. Were and how can I do this, can it be done thorugh an rpm?
 
you would need to give a little more information.
I have fedora core 3 I just open a terminal and type yum update and if ones available it downloads and installs.
 
Unless you have a very good reason, you should just stick with whatever kernel is packaged up for your distribution. Any decent distro will have an update mechanism that will include kernel packages.
