How does this compare to the AIWA CDCMP3. 6th Ave also have this for approx $135, but on their website it's listed as $168. I'm thinking of going with the AIWA just because it's cheaper but think the Kenwood is better in quality.

Thanks

Anyone have this player? Opinion on it's quality? I've been looking for one to get for a while now and that's not a bad price if it's decent quality.

Actually I just installed this one KDC-MP8017 last week in my wife's car. She loves it.
I cannot even tell the difference between MP3s and regular CD.

And better yet, there is a cheaper way on getting it.

Buy it at Crutchfield.com for $249.95 (remember that it comes with all harnesses and installtion instructions that you will need!)
You can also take a $25 discount by using a reference code (mine is 18660614) or find one on the web.
Shipping is only $9.95 so the total should be around $234.90 ( I am actually looking at the receipt)

After you purchased this you can pricematch with your AMEX or other card with this site. (http://6ave.com/product.jsp?x=KDCMP8017)
I am not sure how AMEXes pricematching works, but on the receipt it states that the Kenwood KDC-MP8017 is $249.95, so you mught get $49.XX is you're lucky or at least get $24.XX and have a free harness.

The sound quality is first rate in my opinion. I just need to upgrade my stock nissan speakers to keep up with the power and range the deck has. I do miss a volume knob though. I still reach for it only to find these small buttons. I don't really care for the button setup. They are small and hard to hit with your fingers.

The best part about the Kenwood is that you can setup folders for different music. And you can randomize a folder and it'll also play it's subfolders if it has any. When you turn it off and back on, it continues from where it left off. It does take a few seconds to check the disc each time you start it up or put in a new CD, but it's not too noticable. It displays the folder names and the artist/title from the ID3 tag so you know what your listening too. It can be hard to remember the names of the 150 songs on your disc. I prefer to use CDRWs so I can constantly change the discs with new music.

And the deck can be illuminated in green or red. This is my first Kenwood and I have recommended it to all my friends.

I have this deck. Its been very good to me so far (5 months). My only complaint is that the random function doesn't seem to choose from multiple directories, so for a big random mix, I burn CDs with no directories. Maybe I just haven't figured out how to do that yet...

I occasionally notice that the deck gets buggy-- but a quick on/off solves that problem. The read/cache time is very quick, the EQ is WAY better than the sony and the aiwa.

I recommend this deck, especially at this price!

fell free to ask me more questions about operation, installation, etc.

You can't do the Crutchfield price match thing anymore because they stopped carrying it. They now only carry the Kenwood Excelon mp3 player. I bought mine from them a month ago when they had it and just pricematched today, and I got the Ebates $5.

I believe for the random mix to work, you have to first make an empty directory and then have subfolders in it. I think the random will play all music in the folder plus the subfolders. So you can randomize from the first folder and it'll play all the subfolders. The instruction manual is pretty hardcore when it comes to mp3 disc setup.

I found the deal on this page so it looks pretty legit:

http://www.pricegrabber.com/search_getprod.php?masterid=421746&isbn=&tab_id=&zip_code=85018&found=1&ut=41651f063f358103

But I haven't purchased from them before.

Shoot I never thought of that before! :D
I have had this deck for awhile now and its great. Decent power, way better power vs. the stock deck.
I love the option to flip the face or detach it completely.
Never skips, reads ID3 tags etc etc.

Complaints a little slow to read cd's, won't randomize across the whole disk with folders, but hopefully the said above fixes that. Also you can get a universial remote from kenwood too! :)

I bought this deck last may...for $359(I think), and that was a bargain then. Anywho...Its a good deck, mine skips sometimes, but I think that's the media I used.

Had my 8017 installed about two weeks ago. After messing with the EQ settings, it sounds fantastic with my Alpine amp and MBQuart RS-160's. The tuner blows away my old Alpine head...strong, solid signal, and I always thought it was my antenna. Yeah, the buttons are small, and it's difficult to change folders in 5th gear without weaving. Still learning all the intricacies...otherwise, excellent deck, well deserving of MaxPC's 9 verdict.

Don't get the AIWA, i've heard really bad things about them.

Alpine is going to release some "cheaper" ones with MP3 support, their current model isn't flying off the shelves cause of their high price.

Actually, this would make it see the whole CD as one album, and you couldn't use the album skip functions, IIRC. To me, it's much more worthwhile to be able to skip albums than shuffle the whole CD. If I want to shuffle the whole CD, I make a second CD with all the files in the root, and let it shuffle those.

Definately a great player though. I bought it in November(too late to PM :() for $350, and haven't regretted it for a minute. I started looking for the Koss at Frys that was supposedly $99. They didn't have it, so I bought the Aiwa for $150ish. It looked crappy, so I went home, and saw reviews for the Fosgate unit for ~$200, so I went to try it out. Went to one store, it wouldn't take my CD. They got out a new unit, same thing. Second store, it ATE my cd. I then moved up to the Kenwood for $350, expecting to PM it down to $250, but never did. It worked great and had the features I wanted. My only regret is that the new Pioneer looks nice, and I'd like to check it out too...

Anyway, It's been great, and I am thinking about picking up another for my wife's car.

This is a great deal on a going out of date player.

I have ordered from 6ave.com before but never on their website. However, the service I received from Phil (ext 513) was excellent. He saved me over 150 dollars on a denon receiver I wanted and was the only denon authorized online seller that even attempted to work with me.

I definitely give phil two thumbs up and will be posting a positive reveiw of them on reseller ratings

I've had one for over a year now i highly recommend it! In the year+ that i've had it
its never skipped and the dmask flip thing is great for hiding it. Don't know what's
coming up in the future but I hear the JVC is a good competitor. If you want something
proven get the Kendwood!

i just purchased this head unit at a circuit city b&m, about a week later i got my crutchfield catalog and it was well.. like 100 bucks cheaper, i tried to exchange it but they basically said no, since it was an online store they couldn't do it, then i told them then i would return it and order it from crutchfield which they then said it was a 35 dollar restocking fee, anyone know of a B&M store that would have this unit cheaper than 350, hopefully for around the 269 price i saw or cheaper if at all possible... thanks in advance

I read a ton of reviews and comparisons of all the different car mp3 players available on the market a while back when I was shopping for a car mp3 player, and I have to agree with snowairg, the JVC KD-SH99 kicks some major ass. I have the JVC and it's awesome. I recommend spending a little more for the JVC over this unit, it's well worth every penny.

Ok, I want this deck. But with the all the upgrades I have been doing with my computer equipment and motorcycle I will have to find a buyer for my KDC-4011s. Does anyone here know what I should ask for a selling price on my old unit?

I bought mine when they were about 360 and I love it. Its 10x better than the aiwa. The awia has definate problems of long term life. I know several people who have taken them back because they just stopped working.
