Hey all,
I didn't see this posted anywhere else, and I am assuming it's all Best Buy's...but they are currently running a $30 rebate on the True 72x drives $129 - $30 = $99. Get a 72x for the price of a 52x.

Sort of an OT question:

Why do people still buy CD-ROM drives? I mean if you bought a DVD drive you'd have the option of watching movies/playing DVD games and still play any CD you could in a regular CD-ROM drive. I don't think I'll ever buy another CD-ROM drive now that DVD drives are available. Sorry for intruding on your post GH.

RB: maybe because they're cheaper? Or maybe because people don't want to watch DVDs on their PC? And DVD games? Hah!

Actually, I have a CD-ROM, DVD, and CD-R in my PC :) Hmm, what else can I get?

I have this drive, and besides making a sort of bizarre, higher-pitched spinning noise, I haven't noticed that it's incredibly faster than the 32X that came with my Gateway. (I only got this because of a pricing screwup, and it was $15... I assumed 72x would make my life so much better. All I got was $15 worth of empty promises.)

I'm so depressed now.

RagingBITCH,

Many people have standalone DVD players, so then what's the point of paying a little extra for a DVD-ROM drive in your computer if you already have one on what is usually a better entertainment system. That cash is better spent getting a faster CD-ROM drive. Personally, I doubt I'll buy a DVD-ROM for the system I'm currently putting together specifically for the fact that I'll have a DVD player in my dorm room; in any other case I'd be on your side :).

The only thing you are gonna notice on this drive is faster extraction when burning stuff thats why the faster drive. If I wanted to rip a mp3 off a cd this drive would blow away my dvd drive, and cd burner.I am getting one of these drives for my other system that im building since I have those things in my other system.By the way good price for B&M

RagingB...
I'll never have a DVD drive in my PC because I already have two standalone component ones. Plus I never liked watching movies on a 17" screen. Yeah the image quality is great, but I'd rather kick back on the couch and watch it on a 32" screen. Also All the PC DVD "extra" stuff that I've seen come on a few DVD's is never worth bothering with. Stupid games and screen savers are usually all that's on there.

I'm holding out until DVD-RW becomes standard..o or at least cheaper..then I'll delve into the DVD/PC arena.

I see what ya'll mean

I have no real reason for a standalone DVD player at the moment so this will have to do - that and I can use tv out on the H+ card to watch it on the 27" :D

I've got a DVD, CD, CDR, PD, and another CD in my computer.. and they all seem to come in handy. $99 seems like a good price for that drive, but I'm not a big IDE fan..

Another thing about DVD-drives are they are multi-read capable, so they can read just about anything under the sun, including CD-RW, which oddly enough, some CD-ROMS dont read... Also some, not many, but some stuff is startin to come out on DVD, programs wise. Just my 2 cents :D

Sorry, but Ithink that is a little stupid to buy a 72xfor 129 or 99 $ when some store such as compusa or o.d carrie cdrom 52x from 30-50$.It isn't insane to pay a 70-100$ of difference for only 22x of speed????

The reason it's more expensive is the TrueX tech. Nice, but the drive just isn't all that it's cracked up to be.

I have a slot load DVD, and i have a 40x plextor too. Why? to do disk dupe.. and so i don't kill the dvd drive reading a bunch of cd's...
