Kentucky lawmaker’s bill forces men to get note from wives before purchasing Viagra

Rep. Mary Lou Marzian, a Louisville Democrat, has introduced a bill that would force men who want to use erectile dysfunction drugs to jump through a series of humiliating hoops beforehand, such as visiting a doctor twice and getting notes from their wives.

“I want to protect these men from themselves,” Marzian, who is a nurse, told the Courier-Journal.

“This is about family values,” she added.

It's the same as that bill to require licensing of journalists, making a point about gun licenses.

I really wish they wouldn't do this, making bills ironically and in bad faith is IMO not a good way to use the system, even if it makes a point and raises awareness.

Now, if the KY Democrats want to be as effective and legislatively competent as the Republican House, they just need to pass this bill another 50 or so times while waiting for it to get ignored as the political stunt that it is.

Aw, come on dude. Government needs a bit of levity now and again.

As far as raising awareness on an issue goes, it's a pretty cheap way to raise as much awareness as she has.

Bundle it with a bill containing the usual abortion restrictions and you have a deal. None of those requirements are humiliating at all, in fact that she thinks they are just shows you that most feminists are stupid.

So let me get this right, where she lives they passed a law which states before an abortion a woman must meet with a doctor in advance of the procedure...not a priest, not a counselor, not a pro life group, but a doctor...and she has a problem with that and as such is introducing legislation which she knows has no chance of passing to try and make some weird point?

I can't see how making it so folks go to a doctor before a procedure is a terrible thing

Unless that doctor has the legal ability to ask if that person owns a gun, amirite?!?

Yeah, forcing a woman to have a transvaginal ultrasound before allowing her to have an abortion isn't in the least bit humiliating.

She's taking a life, I don't feel the need to save her from "humiliation" by allowing her to conveniently and self-servingly describe the fetus as just a "clump of cells" or trying to think of abortion as anything other than what it is. If that humiliates you then damn straight I think you can use some humiliating. As P.J. O'Rourke said "There is only one basic human right, the right to do as you damn well please. And with it comes the only basic human duty, the duty to take the consequences." Well, if you're going to exercise the right to "do as you damn well please" and have an abortion then you sure as shit can face the consequences of having a damn good look at that fetus you're killing.

And if it's an ectopic pregnancy, "tough shit, stick this wand inside you and deal with it, you baby murderer", amirite?!?

With ectopic pregnancy an ultrasound is standard practice to locate where the pregnancy is. Next excuse?

Oh dear, that is a very large horse you're sitting on. Do you get many nosebleeds?

A transvaginal ultrasound is required? I wasn't aware of that!

Generally, yes. It's that "standard of care" thing. I guess doctors must not care too much about "humiliating" patients in this very use case, eh?

http://www.aafp.org/afp/2000/0215/p1080.html

Ectopic pregnancy occurs at a rate of 19.7 cases per 1,000 pregnancies in North America and is a leading cause of maternal mortality in the first trimester. Greater awareness of risk factors and improved technology (biochemical markers and ultrasonography) allow ectopic pregnancy to be identified before the development of life-threatening events. The evaluation may include a combination of determination of urine and serum human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) levels, serum progesterone levels, ultrasonography, culdocentesis and laparoscopy. Key to the diagnosis is determination of the presence or absence of an intrauterine gestational sac correlated with quantitative serum beta-subunit hCG (ß-hCG) levels. An ectopic pregnancy should be suspected if transvaginal ultrasonography shows no intrauterine gestational sac when the ß-hCG level is higher than 1,500 mlU per mL (1,500 IU per L). If the ß-hCG level plateaus or fails to double in 48 hours and the ultrasound examination fails to identify an intrauterine gestational sac, uterine curettage may determine the presence or absence of chorionic villi. Although past treatment consisted of an open laparotomy and salpingectomy, current laparoscopic techniques for unruptured ectopic pregnancy emphasize tubal preservation. Other treatment options include the use of methotrexate therapy for small, unruptured ectopic pregnancies in hemodynamically stable patients. Expectant management may have a role when ß-hCG levels are low and declining.

Transvaginal ultrasounds are not required to diagnose an ectopic pregnancy, although they can be used, just like they can be used in...wait for it...regular pregnancies!

I wonder, though, if ectopic pregnancies are different than regular pregnancies?

Like, what happens if an ectopically pregnant woman decides not to become a baby murderer?

The prolifers who have children are the biggest killers of children. They'll take as many lives as required until they get what they want. If these guys need viagra to get it up to have a kid I don't feel the need to save them from "humiliation" by allowing them to conveniently and self-servingly claim they aren't responsible because there was no way to prevent all those failed embryos, excuse me children. If that humiliates because your too stupid to know about abstinence or safe sex then damn straight I think you can use some humiliating.

Sure, exclude the 0.0197% that are ectopic from the requirement if that really matters to you. And I didn't' call them baby murderers, I said they were taking life of a fetus and shouldn't be allowed to whitewash that fact. If it hurts their poor feelings I really don't give a damn. Having an abortion shouldn't be like buying a package of shrink-wrapped meat from the supermarket where we can pretend an animal wasn't slaughtered to provide it. If you're going to take life (yes, even a fetal life) then you need to fully own that action, forcing the ultrasound removes that self-created rationalization that it is "just a ball of cells" and puts the reality right in front of them. If that's upsetting or even "humiliating" then good, that's exactly how it should be.

Abortion is already highly regulated on the state and federal level...just as is buying that package of meat that is state and federally regulated to make sure it's safe.

So.

Ditto for pro-lifers having kids. You need to own all those dead kids you had. No rationalizing that you didn't have control over all those miscarriages. You had sex now you have to own that responsibility.
