Kentsfield Xeon Coming

Intel is taking yet another page from AMD's book and this time it's Socket 775 Xeon! I think this is a great news for otherwise quite boring Kentsfield. So we get the Xeon with regular DDR2 support on LGA775 socket! I wasn't really excited by Kentsfield at all (Smithfield, anyone?) but now I am. I think this is a smart move by Intel for everything considered. 4-cores are enough to justify a single-socket server, too.

What am I missing? Other than a slightly cooler name what does Xeon bring to the table that Kentsfield doesn't?

To me it's like AMD bringing opty's to 939, basically the same chip with a different name

There are two forces working against each other in the overclocking heavens.

In one corner, we have Intel's 65nm process, which is maturing at a quick pace and thus greatly increasing overclockability.

In the other corner, we have an increased number of cores per chip. Each additional core reduces overclockablilty at the expense of providing greater stock speed performance. With Conroe, you only had to worry about two cores being able to overclock to a certain speed; with Kentfield, you know have to worry about the integrity of four, and your max overclock will only be as fast as the least overclockable of all your cores.

Remember the Abit BP6? Some motherboard manufacturer needs to jury-rig together a cheap dual-socket 775 board pronto.

Well, looks like I'm gonna have to sell my C2D and get a Xeon. I'm thinking the Xeon 3040 for OC'ing goodness

good point.....get the advantages of 4mb for 20 bucks more then the E6300....it would be nice if it oc'd like the E6300, but alas I think it will end up ocing like the 6600-6700....

I think it may be up in the air of "ocing goodness"...

If I can get 3.2GHz then it would be worth it. With my E6400 I can get up to 3.5GHz with being Orthos stable. But for normal usage, running @stock vcore, 10c lower temps, I run @ 3.2GHz.

what am I missing though?? If we are talking about kentsfield are we not talking about quad cores??? if so why are we discussing dual core Xeon 3040's???

Because both are meant for single-processor (LGA775) platform, I guess. These are like Intel version of Socket 939 Opterons. Someone buy the 3040/3050 and report back if it has 4MB or 2MB. I was pretty sure it's 4MB but keep getting mixed information.

My bad, I got into the dual core when this thread is about quad sorry.

About the cache on the different versions, just check the pic on newegg and blow it up, you can unclearly see 3060 and up are 4mb , and below are 2mb. FWIW

I read the INTEL PDF on the xeon's the 3040 and the 3050 are both 2mb L2 while the 3060 and 3070 are 4mb. Ill get a ss but someone needs to re link me to that pdf.

That would be awesome. I hope we hear of some board manufacturer who decides to do this soon.

I can see it now, Via is back with a vengence with a dual processor 775 chipset...unfortunately, probably not going to happen. Because Intel sure as hell isn't going to release another 440BX type chipset that allows you to run dual 775s.

Agreed. If they did, I'm thinking that Abit might try to make their comeback. Wouldn't that be nice? Then Duvie could just run dual E6400's @3.5-3.6 Ghz.

Haha, neither would anyone else. That's why Via hasn't released it yet.
