Keeping mosquitoes away

They ruin summer. How to keep them away? I hate wearing repellants because they feel so chemical...

You can't. Get rid of standing water around the house, and don't forget the gutters. Make sure there's no damp foliage either. You might just be unlucky, and skeeters especially like you. My daughter has that problem.

Know something funny? It doesn't really help the ant problem but for your entertainment, squirt a line of windex along a trail of ants. It throws off their chemical scent so they don't know WTF to go. Magnifying glasses and hairspray + lighter are gratifying to take out ants with. As a CA native, I had my fair share of fun with this problem

@OP sometimes if it's not too windy, citronella candles reduce the number of mosquitoes but they aren't some kind of shield like some makers of the candles advertise. No replacement for deet.

Friend of mine was in mosquito control for years, and he says that mosquitoes don't travel far, so yeah, try to make sure any standing water around you is drained. Just a bucketful can breed enough of them to bother you. If you have standing water nearby but not on your property discuss it with the property owners or the town.

Thanks for the tip. I ordered the burgess fogger and Black Flag fogging insecticide. I'll pickup a bottle of Spectracide malathion at Home Depot next week as well.

As much as they suck to put on the repellants seem to be the best way.

If in an enclosed area like indoors the green spiral things you light on fire work well. We call them a "pic" but not finding much on google if I type that. It's basically an incense of cancerous chemical smoke that kills them.

Remove standing water.
Toss in larvicidal tablets in areas like ditches where standing water may collect (this will help more earlier in the season if you can stop things early on).
Get a zapper, optionally add the scent pack to it to help lure even more of them to it. Place a bit away from where you want to be, and hopefully between where they might hang out (water).
For something like a party, the fogger above is a good option as well.

Make sure you don't have sweat or anything that could attract them more than usual.

You ca't get rid of them besides using repellent so you either get used to it or stay inside .

I'll fog the yard heavily on nights we want to sit outside by the fire pit or in the driveway. Even that doesn't deter them all the time and sometimes a second fogging is required.

I hate Minnesota.

Black flies are tolerable, there's usually only 1 or 2. Mosquitoes there's 394985843958 of them.
