Keep Opty 175? or Sell?

I'm finding that a lot of people are hitting a higher OC with a CHEAPER processer (aka the 165) opposed to my 175.

So now the question is, should I sell the Opteron 175 (which gets a respectable OC) and then get a newer 165/170 and try to OC the sh!t out of that, or try to get a little more out of my 175?

Currently I'm almost positive it takes at least 1.53 volts to be stable at ~2.7-2.8ghz. I'm seeing a lot of 165's doing it at <1.45v. And to hit FX-60 speeds it takes about 1.5volts and if I'm lucky maby a little less.

It seems the 550/551 steppings get good OC's. So should I switch?

The 165s go for low 300...it has a 9x multiplier, make sure that you mobo can handle high HTT

...it all matters on luck, IMO, just keep your cpu for now until the AM2 or something.....

when you say a lot of people hitting a higher OC....did you compare that to the HIGHER amount of people who cannot hit that speed or require a mass amount of voltage? All you're doing now is wasting money and taking a chance to get a higher oc AND even with a higher oc, you would only notice a small percentage increase in applications....you could end up with a much worse cpu. IMO, the opterons are a little hyped out....sure a lot of them can OC very high....but then you're all just pushing more and more voltage on it. The main difference between the X2 and opterons is that the opterons can handle higher voltage with increases to MHz....the X2 hits a wall somewhere between 1.5V and they won't be able to get much of an increase in MHz even if you up the voltage a lot

Most of the people hitting 2.8 are using 1.5/1.6v, which is fine on a single core, but rather risky on a dual o_o

Im not a stepping expert, but i did some reasearch on steppings before i bought my 170 & 165, 0551 isnt that great a stepping if i recall, some people struggled to get past 2.3, but stepping aside, overclocking is sort of hit & miss.

Persoanlly it is a waste of money to do this..you will lose too much on your 175

I bought a 165 got it to 2.6...then saw monarch sending out a bunch of 0530 tpmw over xmas(about 1 week after I got the 165) so I bit again...do I get a 0530 nope..got a 0546 xpmw that does 2.7@1.5...total waste of money for 90mhz

I sold my 165 finally at $30 loss

well, got the fever again ...I had a way to get 170 0550 upmw...so another big purchase..figure I would just sell my other 170 if I get lucky for hopefully cost as I got it at a good price(170 went up in last mo at retail level per AMD..well guess what now they are dropping again..so I am hosed when I resell my 170...ugh)

I have to stop getting worked up over 100-200 mhz....

I am done now for sure..hopeful I will get my new chip soon..get an OC and sell at as little of a loss as possible

I am also in the market for either a 170 or 175, which do you recommend for highest overclockability?

The 175 has not shown higher OCs..but cost too much IMHO

get a 165 or 170..if you need a 10x multiplier the na 170 otherwise the 165 is very good

you have a very good chance of getting 2.6ghz on either, 2.7+ is more luck of the draw

there are some steppings on the 165 that do real well..equal or better than 170

It appears that the 165 vpmw does real well(2.6-2.7 is pretty good bet and in some cases much higher also)
170 upmw is very good in most cases...170 vpmw is showing better results on some forums..though there have been duds with all chips/steppings
165 vpmw>165upmw
170 upmw=, > ??170vpmw..this is very close

You guys are nuts...What are you guys doing such that 100 MHz here or there makes a difference?

waste of money for a couple hundred MHz at the most. just because some have reported being able to reach a certain overclock, doesn't necessarily mean you will.

I am nuts...no doubt about..but it is like disease..you get the itch to try

it is an absolute waste of money I admit 100%

First time I ever did this with a set of chips....usually I just accept what I get but it was just so tempting....oh well

win never and lose alot..HEHE

also if I could not afford to lose a $100 I would never have done...

Out of curiosity, are you sure it's your CPU that limits you to the speed, or is it the mobo not running high HTT?

I've seen a lot of people think they have bad processors when it's actually the mobo. I don't mean to imply that you don't know what you're doing though, so hopefully you understand what I mean :)

Well wizboy11,

What did you finally do?

I have a 175 and I OC about 10%. It's rock solid. runs cool after the Prime tests. The memory/CPU combonation is good. I went with the 175 so I wouldn't have to OC to much and make the Rig last longer. For a few MHZ I haven't seen any big difference in the real world of using this Rig like in Photoshop CS2 etc.

Just wondering

Robert
