Keep Nexus 7 or get the new one?

Hey guys, I recently picked up a Nexus 7- the old one for 270. It was a steal getting the HSPA+ version for that cheap. However after messing with it today, it's frozen a couple of times and there's some general unresponsiveness.

Have any of you moved to the newer nexus 7? Should I move to the newer one? Are some of you keeping your old nexus and why?

Thanks for your input.

I've noticed similar on my old Nexus 7. I've been willing to be patient with it though because I bought it for $180. I mainly use it for reading and internet though, so my usage doesn't really bog it down. The only other thing I use it for is to keep my toddler busy and he's destroyed it beyond belief. If I were you, i'd consider getting the newest one if you just bought the previous model, no reason to be out of date especially if your usage may demand top of the line.

I don't like anything with a tegra cpu, arm is more the adequate for a nexus tablet

Get the new one. Night and day difference. Got my gf the old version last year and got myself the new version when it came out. Much more clear display and much faster.

She only uses it for reading books and occasional web browsing so it works great for that.

I'm keeping my old one only because I already have it. However, if I had the choice between a $270 Nexus 7 (2012) vs. a $350 (2013), I'd choose the latter every time.

What version of Android is it running? It was clunky on 4.1.2, better on 4.2.2 and smooth(ish) on 4.3.

If you want a really good experience, root it and install a custom ROM(I prefer Cyanogenmod).

I have been disappointed with the Nexus 7 performance since I got it. I still don't think its a very smooth experience generally although things have improved a little with software and after resetting it.

I have considered buying the new one seeing as how its meant to be quite a lot quicker but seeing as how so many people seem happy with the N7 1st gen performance I suspect the "v2 is so much better" might also not meet my expectations of performance and smooth behaviour.

You know Bman, I was willing to give tegra one more try but you're right... I don't know what nVidia did but they messed up somewhere. I have a tegra 2 in my Galaxy Tab 10.1 and I don't even use that thing anymore because it's so laggy. The T3 is a lot better, but between it switching from the power save core to the quad core produces a noticeable amount of lag.

Although it is an 80 dollar difference, adding tax into the mix it becomes a $111 difference butI think I'll bite... I'm with T-mobile and I am paying for the service with LTE. Might as well take advantage of it right?

Thanks for your opinion guys.

Its not just the Tegra, although it certainly doesn't help. There's something about garbage collection on the EMMC that the N7-2012 uses. Trim helps if you upgrade to 4.3 but there's a lot of discussion on it at XDA.

Also seems to affect the Asus Transformer line. (200-300-700).

The new one is wayyyyy better (and I've owned both). Considerably lighter, screen is way nicer (retina-style PPI), thinner, much faster SoC. It's a massive generational upgrade and worth the difference in price.

I believe there is something up with the flash chips used on the 1st gen which contributes to the lag quite a bit. Or so I've read.
