HI All

I posted last week and cant decide. I recently purchased the P4 2.6 800fsb when Newegg had a sale for 169.00 The best deal around for this cpu. With Prescott coming out with a 2.8 for 178.00 I was thinking about sending it back. But, Im more interested in no problem install than the extra power. But, according to reports the 2.8 prescott might not be widely available until the 2nd quarter. So if I send this 2.6 back and the 2.8 isnt available that means I'll have to pay more for it in a couple of weeks. What would u guys do? I have to make my decision by tonight.

thanks

I would keep the 2.6c...OC the snot out of it and sit back and wait to see how the presott is....

1) see if the added cache, and other features make it worth a damn...

2) see how support for it among your mobo and other i865/i875 mobos will be...bios updates...and power issues probably...

3) see how the heat issues with thing are going to be and maybe then your 2.6c may oc to levels with air cooling that may be difficult to obtain with the prescott if in fact it is running warmer then same speed northwood....One ongoing report I have been reading had that user running much warmer then his northwood...

edit remember you likely will be charged a 15% restock and likely cannot get a full refund unless you lie and say it is damaged which I think is wrong....You spent the money now live with it....

the beautiful thing is the INtel cpu hold there value well and you wont see much of a drop in the 2.6c price anyways has seen with the 2.4c in the last price drops...the 160 range is about as low as this thing is going to go for a retail box...

Well you're taking a chance if you send it back, but you could end up saving some money or getting a better processor. The Prescott is supposed to come out the 2nd, hopefully some places will have benchmarks before then. Some people in Europe already own Prescotts. If you send it back and the Prescott comes out widely on the 2nd, then you will save money on the 2.6C which will have a price drop or you can buy a Prescott.

It's essentially a tossup, you might get screwed but you might not. It all depends on what kind of risk you're willing to take.

But I would suggest sending it back in, I am holding off purchase on a P4C to see what the prices do when the Prescott comes out.

Good post, my mobo supports the Prescott (IC7) but the chance of prices lowering makes holding off on buying a P4C worth the wait. IMO, he should send it back and wait, unless he needs the computer soon. I think much more information about the Prescott will come out this week and if you return it, you won't lose that much $

HI Again

I bought this processor from Newegg. I didnt even take it out of the packing box. Newegg said they would take it pack with no restocking fee. All i have to do is pay around 6 bucks for shipping and handling. But, I feel like this processor is already at the sweet spot of intels lineup and dont think it will go down at all. Considering I bought it for 6 bucks under the established internet rate. LIke I said in my original post though the 2.8 prescott might be hard to find at first release. Then I end up paying a more.

Like I said keep the 2.6c now and wait a few months and see how they pan out for speed, support, and price....

early adopters always take the hit in these areas....

I likely wouldn't migate to a prescott for 3-4 months at least cause it wil take that long for me to see the numbers and how will they are ocing to try to surpass what I have now....

Heck I am at the cusp of air cooling now and if the prescotts run hotter I may not get a 3.3-3.4ghz cpu to run and then it better be 200-400 more boots of over same speed northwood....
