Keep it or get rid of it?

So we had a little snow event here last week and I managed to slide my 2014 Explorer into a curb when I hit an ice patch on a curve. I was going no more than 15 mph when it started to slide and there was nothing I could do to stop it. I am amazed that the repairs are going to cost around 5K so now I am wondering that when all is said and done if it will ever be right again. The only thing involved is the left front wheel and associated parts connected to it. Just curious what opinions are regarding whether this will end up leading to endless alignment issues or if once it is fixed it should be ok to go?

I would wait till the work is done. I get your concern, but I wouldn’t jump to conclusions. Now if you just want a new car...go for it.

Well a new car is always nice but I have been real happy with this one and it only has 24500 miles on it. I am currently thinking I'll get it back and drive it for a few months and see how it goes.

That’s what I would do. If you like the car...might as well give it a shot.

Just curious...did you have snow tires on?

This is a tough situation. The option you have will cost you money. You just have to choose which one is less on your pocketbook. You could find someone who can charge you less. For 5k you might be able to buy parts you need for less and have someone install it.

Nope just the original Han

Nope just the Hankook original tires that it came with. They were close to needing to be replaced so I am having Michelin Premier LTX's put on while it is in the shop. We don't get enough snow here in Virginia to justify getting snow tires. One of the worst things about this is that I work for the school system and originally they had a 2 hour delay but that is only for teachers and students. They had just announced a full closure right about the time this happened which meant I didn't even need to be out there at all.

Sucks. Sorry dude. Good luck with the fix. Snow tires are amazing...but definitely not worth the hassle in a lot of parts of the country.

$5k to fix one corner is steep. Even with all new upper and lower control arms, spring, shock, tire, and rim I am having a hard time coming up with that expensive a parts/labor list. Are they having to do frame work? Have you shopped this repair around at all?

That is what the insurance adjuster came up with, the original estimate was about half that but evidently they are replacing some steering component as well which upped it. Unbeknownst to me there was also some minor body damage when the tire hit the trailing edge of the fender as well. All in all a lot of damage for something that didn't even set off the airbags.

Well if insurance is paying for it......

As long as it didn't booger up the frame/unibody I'd just get it fixed and continue to run it.
