Keep gtx580 or wait for 28nm?

So recently I pounced on a great deal on Amazon for the MSI NGTX580 Lightning. After some back and forth with their customer service, I eventually got it for the price of $320.

Fedex will be delivering it today (its already on the truck), and I am still torn whether I should keep it (and sell my 5870) or try to sell it for a profit and hold off until 28nm. What do you guys think? Is it enough of an upgrade at my resolution? Would 28nm come soon enough / be big enough that I should wait for it?

You can probably use the Lightning until 28nm comes out and still get $300 back out of it. Great price!

I'd keep it and use it.

Ahh yes, I didn't think about that way. However, if 28nm is going to be a big leap over the current gen, do you think the 580 will retain its value that well?

I personally prefer my single GTX 480 over my dual 5870s setup, while playing Unreal Tournament III. I still have one 5870 left. I would suggest you try out Nvidia's camp to see which you like better.

Do you find that you need more performance? At your resolution, the 580 should be about 33% faster, and more so in modern games like Crysis 2 and the Witcher 2. I would probably sell the 5870 and keep the 580. Then once you start hearing more concrete rumors about GTX680/HD7970 close to their release, you can just sell the 580. Chances are you would still be able to sell it for $275-300 given that it's the Lightning edition. However, if you feel the performance of the 5870 is satisfactory, then you can sell the card for a profit.

Keep it , use it , enjoy it. All your efforts of web/price searching/monitoring will give you a more rewarding payoff by having one of the best video cards in your rig VS making 80 dollars profit from finding the 'rare' deal.

what monitor do you use?

im wondering if u would even notice any difference at all between a 5870 and a 580GTX.

I do in Batman, Metro, BFBC2 and Witcher 2. Enough that I am pleased with the upgrade. It is more than noticable. Of course it might not so noticable without a fps counter going but DX11 games run a lot better than on the 5870.

I'm using the monitor in sig, 1920x1200.

I'd say dont decide yet, try it first if you feel that the extra performace isn't necessary sell it, but if you go ZOMG this rox then keep it and sell it when the 28nm benches are released, for that price Iwould keep it (maybe even skip the 28nm).

Decision made, I can't bring myself to sell this gtx 580, not after the effort I put into getting the deal 😛. Anyone want a half year old 5870?

Theyre going for ~200$ shipped new...
if youve got the box and everything take 25% off (~$150)
if its just the card alone take 33% off (~$133)

I went from a GTX480 to a GTX580 and it was worth it. About 15-20% faster overall (based on my unreleased benchmarks) with much less noise.

Crap, don't say that!
Heh, the thermals are a lot better - about 5C less under idle and about 10C less under load, with much lower fan speeds. I haven’t seen anything over 75C even after extended gaming sessions; the GTX480 would often hover around 85-87C.

Also the GTX480 would often hit 3000rpm under load while the GTX580 doesn’t really go above 2200rpm. Subjectively it's not quite as quiet as my old GTX285 but it's much quieter than the jet engine that is the GTX480.

I'll probably get one when the GTX 680 comes out and people are selling their 580s... then it will be an IvyBridge upgrade *if my bills are paid down - oh lord! lol*

I went to a 580 from 2 295's, and though in some cases the quad sli outperformed the 580, the 580 is just impressively quiet and powerful.

I just did an i5 2500K + motherboard upgrade too. After selling my old parts to a friend the cost of the upgrade was about $40. Between the new processor and new nVidia drivers, I've got benchmarks coming out of my ears. I might release some of them on the forums if I have time.

To OP, for the price you got it for I think you will be happy with performance and thermals. It's really nice to max out just about any game and still get decent framerates.

Use it and sell it if you want to upgrade. Sell it a week before the new series comes out to keep the resale value. I got back every penny on my 295 when I did this.
