Keep gtx580 or wait for 28nm?

Use it and sell it if you want to upgrade. Sell it a week before the new series comes out to keep the resale value. I got back every penny on my 295 when I did this.

How do you time that? I usually find out the day of the launch.

Keep it. Then if you want to upgrade just sell it and put that cash towards the newer technology.

The Lightning 580 is one of the best video cards out there, I'd use and enjoy it, the 28nm stuff is still far off. You will easily get $300 (or more) for it when 28nm benchmarks come out.

There will be credible rumors about a month before launch. Box shots will be out 1-2 weeks before launch. Visit the forums here regularly and there will be a thread dedicated to it. One of the UK retailers usually has pre-launch pictures of their stock but that is a little late to sell at that point. I recommend doing a buy it now on ebay to sell it more quickly.
