I tried watching Ghost in the Shell a couple of weeks back and I got through, maybe 45 minutes before I turned it off. I liked Akira when I was young and I enjoyed a couple of Mayazaki films, but I think that may be the extent of what i can handle.

I had a whole thread on anime recommendations a little while back and people were very helpful, but I just don't think I can sit and watch a bunch of it.

I can appreciate that to a degree, but can you explain why? I know why I can't sit and watch The Hills, because it makes me lose braincells. I know why I get frustrated watching House because after watching the first few episodes the entire hour is pretty mapped out; incorrect diagnosis for the first 45 minutes (Is it Lupus?) and then some magical happenstance, typically as a result of a hilariously outrageous breaking and entering of the ill person's house to search through their personal shit for clues.

I guess I'm just curious why you don't enjoy anime. Specifically Ghost in the Shell - that was an amazing anime. You probably need to get a few episodes into most anime before you can begin to appreciate them because they are designed to be lengthy series where all episodes are intended to be viewed in order, not individual stand-alone episodes like the majority of American television series of yore.

Sound good. I don't think I can watch anime, so seeing a live-action remake is as close as I'll get to seeing this. If the story is good, they should be able to do something passable with it.

Out of curiosity, why have you convinced yourself you can't watch anime? Typically people who say that have some elitism complex and a phobia that watching a cartoon is degrading. That usually lasts until they realize that anime is NOTHING like American Cartoons. Anyone who I've ever met and introduced to mature anime has become a fan. Cowboy Bebop falls in this category, though on the low end of the spectrum - I consider very few anime that Cartoon Network picked up to be good anime. Cowboy Bebop and Samurai Champloo are probably the only exceptions to the garbage Cartoon Network shows.

Not that I'm accusing you of being elitist or anything; if anything you've shown to be otherwise, so it leaves me genuinely surprised to see you say this.

If you mean GITS, the first animated movie, that sucked. Watch GITS: Stand Alone Complex instead.

Paris Hilton wants to play Faye. 😛

It was Stand Alone Complex. I just found it extremely boring. Maybe I should have stuck with it longer, I don't know.

I still have Cowboy Bebop in my queue, so I'll try that as people seem to love it. Maybe I'll like it better.

Izusaga: Totally agree on House. Someone lent me the first season and I stopped watching after the third episode as they all felt exactly the same.

Your saying that you can't watch anime is akin to someone watching a handful of daytime soaps and then saying that they can't watch TV. To be perfectly honest, I feel that most anime sucks spectacularly much---as well as most TV and most movies---but the ones that are good are completely amazing.

It's true that anime has a different set of conventions than any other visual medium, but, as with any greatly varying "genre" of visual art, there are shows and series to fit any person's tastes, even if they're non-mainstream re the genre.

It's fine if you don't have the time or interest or patience to sit through a bunch of crappy shows to find one that you like, but saying that you "can't watch anime" is a bit unfair to the medium, methinks. 😛

It helps if you know the background with GITS, the problem is the first animated movie is garbage. I recommend reading the first manga series, then watching GITS: SAC.

I know for a fact I can't read manga, it hurts my little brain.

ruu: It was not an absolute statement, I said "I think". It could just be I have not found the right show for me.

FWIW, I thought GitS:SAC was as boring as hell. But I don't tend to like shows like that in the first place, so I wasn't surprised when I didn't like it.

When stuff happens in GitS:SAC, it is as good as good as any anime out there IMHO. Unfortunately, it suffers from long stretches of characters talking about boring philisophical or political crap.

yea philosobabble kills it.
gits 2 was pretty bad as well as is much of anime. sometimes they have a good story idea but rarely do they actually execute it in a form worth watching.

I've never seen Cowboy Bepop so I can't even comment but Keanu is a horrible actor so anything he is in can't be good. Matrix was only good cus of the premis.

Speaking of live action movies, whatever happened to that Evangelion live action movie they were talking about? Not that it really matters, since the Rebuild of Evangelion is shaping up nicely.

Coming up next! Hellsing and FLCL live action!

Err, the "philosobabble" is the point of the series. the action is to keep the ADD crowd happy.

lol, got bored huh? Don't think of it as anime and you'll enjoy it more. Anime is just the medium, you are missing the message.

Yeah mxyzptlk, don't bold the SPOILER part you r-tard. Nothing worse than online dopes with spoilers. Plus you're "spoiler" is just your interpretation. Pretty much like the end of the Sopranos.

I'm just amazed to hear they're making a Cowboy Bebop live action movie. Will it be the next big thing after super hero movies? Basically the same i guess. There were only two good super hero movies this year and those were Dark Knight and Iron Man. They need to stop making so many of them.

I think a Cowboy Bebop movie with Keanu would be cool. Not the best actor around...and it would be hard to imagine his hair style. Anyone else wanna throw some celeb names out there who should play Spike? I can't think of any off the top of my head.

Speaking of Hellsing... I finally got some subs for episode 5 of Hellsing Ultimate... the fight for London begins!

ADV is making it from what I remember. It's been in the works for nearly 3-4 years now and nothings but 2-3 concept art have been shown. No one expects it to be good though, it's just a question of whether it's so bad it's good or this flatout sucks.

Ya, the manga ended recently as well, so the OVA can't run out of source material.
