KDS Rad-5X 15" LCD Monitor $327 shipped @ amazon.

DVI == Digital Video Interface. Basically it's a digital connection between your graphics adaptor and your flat panel. Your usual connector from your graphics card is your typical VGA analog connector. DVI provides generally a sharper image than analog but in my opinion.. In the past, it was definitely true that DVI was better than a VGA connector but now there are some Flat Panels that look nearly as good with an analog signal. Anyhow, i think that the KDS display is probably quite fine with a VGA connector.
 
just my opinion, but every digital monitor will eventually be DVI. To buy an analog-only now is a waste of money. The digital-analog-digital conversion sux, no matter how good you think it looks. Call me a techno-elitist, but I can't stand kludges like that. If you are forking over $327 might as well spend a few bux more to get DVI.
 
Great, a Platinum moron telling those of us that think the RAD5 looks great that our opinions are wrong. I've seen 15" LCDs with DVI interfaces that don't look as good as the RAD5. Buy the RAD5, its not a waste of money, although I spent about $100 less 6 months ago for one.

LOL...I'm a moron now for posting my opinion? Most people keep their monitors a LOT longer than their PCs. What are you going to do 2-3 years down the road when all video cards feature DVI-only output?

Hey, it's your money, spend it as you choose. But $327 IS a lot to spend on a monitor or any computer part these days. I just thought I'd inform those people who may not be aware of the implications of the interface of this monitor. I'm sure it looks nice, but it's limited from day 1. Plus you are at the mercy of the DAC on your video card. If this monitor is so good, it WILL reveal a bad quality RAMDAC, like many of the nVidia cards have.
 
The problem with DVI is that is not offered in a way that everyone can have easy access to it (ie price, avalibility). Yes in a few years alot more people will be using it but analog will still be around (in fact even those companies offering DVI include analog adapters, ie ATI Radeons). A majority still use a non-flat panel monitor and with an exception to those who fidle or buy new computers every once and a while most poeple are still running older systems with analog. Kinda like the DVD arguement, they said DVD will replace the VCR (said the same for PVRs too 😀). But most people still have, use and buy the old tech.

Not that I don't want a DVI monitor and card, but it's too expensive of an upgrade for me. I could survive on my substandard Rad-5 with an analog connection 😉

This is true, and definitely something to consider, although I's bet 95% of the people buying the RAD5 would not notice a difference.

I'm gonna say that DVI insn't a necessity at this point in time and there isn't a whole lot of selection of DVI lcd's that are affordable out there either.

I own a LCD monitor that supports both analog and DVI connections and the one I'm currently using is the analog connection. My video card supports both connections, but I use the analog connection because I believe it looks 99% as good as the DVI connection and it allows me to have the display be at full screen regardless of the resolution. This means that when I need to run a program at 640x480, rather than the native 1280x1024, the image takes up my whole screen, whereas if I use the DVI connection the image is reduced to using a very small portion of my screen in the center. I know that there are some people that prefer having the monitor use a smaller, sharper image, but I prefer it when the image is stretched and takes up the entire screen. So far I haven't been able to achieve this when using a DVI conneciton but this is done automatically when I use the standard DB-15 connection.

I believe that the inability to stretch the image to use the full screen at resolutions lower than the native resolution of an LCD when using a DVI connection is something that cannot be avoided, but if anyone knows how to bypass this, then I would really appreciate them PM'ing me the information so I could try it and see how it compares to the standard DB-15 connection I'm currently using.

To make a long story short...I don't think that the lack of DVI support by the KDS monitor is really a big deal...but that's just my 2 cents.

I totally agree...that's like saying with the invention of DVD's VHS is now obsolete...I think it will be a LONG time before CRT monitors are ever "extinct" and if the time ever does come, your LCD monitor purchased today will be long dead. My work uses a DVI input and I really cannot see any real benefit or quality increase that would justify spending an extra $100 to get it. IMHO, this monitor is great, but the price isn't that good. I'm sure a better price could be found.
