If you have one (or more) of these KDS CD Organizers, please let me know the following:

1) Does it work with your Windows XP Pro?
2) Does it work with XP Pro SP1?
3) Does it work with your USB 2.0?
4) Does it work with your AMD Shuttle SFF (SN41G2)?
5) If it works, after connecting the USB cable, what does it show up as in your system settings in your control panel?

I'm trying to narrow down the particular set of circumstances that is causing this thing not to work after my upgrade. Thanks.

Thanks VERY much. I have run every version of software from the 2.xx's to the 4.02 (and some betas). I think the problem is BEFORE the software-- that is, that something about my setup is not recognizing the hardware properly.

Yes. Everything else works quite well. It recognizes my towers as "USB Human Inteface Devices," which I know is wrong. Is there any way to force XP to recognize the hardware for what it is, absent an .inf file?

No. It came with a software program, but no drivers. I guess they were counting on the drivers coming through Windows with no problems.

The USB Human Interface should work correctly then, provided that you install the software. I have seen lots of USB devices that do odd jobs use the Human Interface Driver. Examples are a Biofeedback Sensor and a USB Racing Wheel.

Wait, I'm confused. It shows up as KDS CD Organizer untill you install the supplied software?

And I know this is a bit dumb but have you completly set up the organizer according to the instructions with all the software installed?

Por--

No. Before I upgraded to a new computer, it showed up as a KDS CD Organizer on my old computer in the system portion of the control panel. After upgrading to new hardware, it is recognized as USB HID (which makes me think this is a hardware / driver issue). Yes, I've installed it by the numbers according to instructions.

Have you contacted their support yet? If it's showing up as HID then it does not have the correct drivers loaded. There's a new version of the KDS software on their site. Have you tried that yet?

Their support is defunct. When I WAS able to contact them, they provided the normal sort of useless information that any idiot would have already tried.

As far as software, I've tried everything. The problem is, the software doesn't come with an .inf file so I can force it to recognize correctly!

Sometimes the software itself has the drivers for it. When you load the software it loads the drivers with it. I would uninstall all the KDS software and reload the latest version of it and see what happens.

I currently have 3 hooked up to a Shuttle SB51G at home. Running on XP/SP1 along with a hub on the last USB port with two other devices on that hub. As soon as I get there (4 hours) I'll check and see how they show up and post it here.

the order to do this would be:

unplug the CD Organizer

uninstall the software

reboot

install the software

reboot

plug in the CD organizer

Thanks to everyone who has responded lately.

I guess this will just have to remain a mystery. I've done everything properly and both of these things will not work on this computer where every other USB device works perfectly.

They continue to work fine on other computers. Absent any additional ideas, I will just have to trade them off, give them away to a friend, or wait for an upgrade!

sorry to hear they still aren't working. i talked to the guys at my work that have them and it was um , er , less then helpfull.
does it support working over a network ? maybe you could build a cheep "file server" to access the tower from a LAN.
good luck
