They both have pros and cons -- it's a matter of personal preference.

My preference has always been, KDE on a desktop, gnome on a laptop. I'm not totally sure why gnome on the laptop it's just something I've always done.

I prefer KDE because prior to gnome 2.0 I could not deal with the glitches and bugs while I was trying to conduct day to day activities.

I am very impressed with the quality of both of the latest DEs. I run KDE 3.whatever and Gnome 2 on RedHat 7.3 and they are both great. Only problem is I have just 128mB of ram on that machine :p

I've always gelt that KDE is the better desktop manager, while I prefer some of the Gnome family's applications(Evolution > KMail, Galeon > Konqueror, etc).
Looking forward to Gnome 2.2 though, seems like it will address many of the problems I've had with 1.4 and 2.0.

Try'em both and see what you like.

i haven't used kde extensively in a long time, because it never allowed me to set up the hotkeys that i wanted, and i hotkey just about every app that i run on a daily basis.

both gnome and kde seem very bloated these days, but i think gnome is simpler and minimalist, which i always like.

Like EVERYONE else has posted, "Its ALL a matter of choice!" Try them both for a few just a "few mins" then try each one for a "few hours" and the one your brain feels comfortable with will have you keep going back to it! I do so believe that you can load one or the other on startup!

I'm a very new Linux user, currently using RedHat8.0 and whatever version of Gnome and KDE that comes with it and so far I prefer Gnome.

I used GNOME at first (back in the early days when it was very unstable). The lack of stability and general unpolished feel left a bad taste, and I switched to KDE (then at version 1.1.2, IIRC). I've been consistently upgrading ever since then, and now run KDE 3 (and love it). GNOME has never provided me a good reason to switch back, so I continue to run KDE, and will for the forseeable future.

I got 3 letters for you..."KDE"....now that being said, install both, but run KDE. Since you installed gnome along with GTK+ you will have full access to all gnome applications through KDE. KDE is just easier (at least in my opinion) to use, and with full support for any gnome apps, there is no reason not to use it.
