I've been a long time gnome user, and although I've dabbled in blackbox, xfce, e, and to a minor extent, kde, I'd say about 90% of my linux time since 1999 has been in gnome.

I just put the 4.1 beta of kde on to try and I think I'm a convert for the near future.

I'll post some screenies and things I like/dislike when I get home tonight.

:)

Okay, no time for screenies, but I can highlight a few things quickly.

1. Yakuake. This is pretty cool. Ever played quake? Ever hit "~" to open up the console? Get a terminal on your desktop that rolls down from the top just like that. The default key was F12 I think, but I changed it to the tilde key. It's pretty cool.

2. Plasma is pretty neat too. Some things don't work perfectly yet, but I have a lot of neat things working really well. The comic viewer is neat (check xkcd or any of several other web comics daily by having the comic displayed as part of your desktop).

Wow, great idea. I need to find a similar thing for Gnome.

I'm switching my desktop back to OpenSUSE (because 11 is coming out soon!) so I'm thinking of giving KDE 4 a go. I'd have to find a good theme because the default OpenSUSE KDE 4 theme seems way too dull.

Hope you can post some screenshots soon.

I have the terminal bound to the "~" key in Gnome, but I can't get the effect like in Quake. I might try Yakuake.

Like nightfox posted, "tilda" works quite well. My terminal slides up/down from the top at the press of a button.

Why do people use pics.bbzzdd? I used Photobucket for years and it's never been down or messed up my pics. With pics.bbzzdd, I see a whole bunch of "Firefox cannot open the address" and similar errors.

Can't wait for those pics though.

I've used yakuake on gnome for at least a year now. It installs the kde libs automatically.

I installed KDE4.1 on my ubuntu install. Seemed pretty neat, though the install broke gnome. Seemed smoother/more responsive than gnome.
But then my partition corrupted itself after about a day or two of using it. Oops. Oh well, that's pretty standard for not installing an ubuntu distro fresh.
