Well the government should not have doubled gas prices all the sudden. That was a foolish political move. But the larger issue is the stupidity of human beings. Gas isn't getting taxed because the government is greedy for your hard earned money. And what you personally pay at the pump isn't the only thing in the world that matters.

Fuel means more than just gasoline at the pump; heating homes, cooking food, generating electricity, transporting goods to market are all pretty important matters for most folks.

This strikes me as problematic for Putin, not so much another front of conflict that he can use. Strife in Kazakh lands or not being able to use the launch facility is no where near as important to Putin as preventing a democratic Ukraine from succeeding and thriving within a European infrastructure. That would prove to Russians you don't need an ex spook and 100 rich oligarches to run a mafia state, and Putin can't have that. He just got done bailing out Syria, spreading his forces and attention out more doesn't help him accomplish the blackmailing he frames as an existential need.

According to ABC news tonight, yes, Russia is right now violently involved.

Was listening to the BBC report on this. Kazakhstan is a relatively lower population county with a LOT of mineral wealth and a fair amount of energy reserves as well. Last year they mined 47% of the world's supply of Uranium. So, they really should be more like an UAE but instead they're more like Nigeria. With all that wealth something like 90% of the population is poor. The wealth disparity is huge. The rise in fuel prices sparked the protests but wealth inequality is what's fueling it (no pun intended).

Unfortunately, this is another prime situation where Putin gets to come to the "rescue" and furthers his quest to re-establish the Soviet Union by taking over former territory.

I'll admit I haven't been paying attention. Do Kazakhstani's own lots of large SUV's and pick up trucks? Because here in America it's purt near a violation of the Constitution to have gas prices increase enough to make lumbering vehicle owners have to pay for their indulgence at the pump.

Shit is going to become even more out of hand, and more than just violent protestors could find themselves in the crosshairs of troops.
