The Web site and the software behind it are now owned by a privately held firm called Sharman Networks, based in Vanuatu, an island in the Pacific.

Kazaa will be up for quite a while :)

problem is that you have to actually find an ftp with the songs you are looking for. Not fun...

New version of winMX that works? I will have to download that. As for Kazaa, I find it no big loss because I dont download music from the net. I actually still buy printed music cds. There are plenty of other P2P apps out there that work just as well.

Hate to ruin everyone's day, but this article is old news. Kazaa, Inc. sold the rights to the KaZaA program and network to Sharman Networks months ago, for this very reason. The whole thing was very similar to how a company goes bankrupt and then re-opens the next day with a new name. You'll still be able to get your low bitrate mp3's and pr0n for some time to come.

I've been using WinMX since last summer, usually just getting music videos and things that aren't available in the U.S.. It has always worked for me, though it did have the infrequent "illegal operation" sometimes. The newest version is so much better, and it hasn't crashed yet. Oh, and I you will find several high quality encodings. Not that I'm advocating downloading music...

<------- Couldn't care less about Kazaa.

um, in a peer to peer ntwork, shouldn't it stay up as long there's people running the client? I mean, peer to peer means no server, right?

when will riaa get it?

trying to attack all these file-sharing software companies just simply won't work.

too many to start with...
and if you manage to cut one of them out of business...
that business only ends up selling thier network to 2-3 companies...
only to add onto RIAA's headache.

rather than trying to get rid of them all...
they should try to co-exist and manage/control sharing.

well... but then again... what do i know...

Kazaa was good, the old Morpheus was better, WinMX crashes too much to be good yet.....I still say if you look hard enough you can find anything on the net.
*sigh* I still miss Napster.... :(

Hmm WinMX hasnt crashed on my system yet.. And I've been using it for more then a year.

WinMX 3.1 rocks now! You can download from multiple users just like kazaa. Plus, WinMX doesnt have any spyware (knock on wood)..

How come no one mentions audiogalaxy? yeah the interface is pretty dorky but as far as music files go, I've been able to get anything I want there and the downloads are fast also....not sure why the RIAA hasn't gone after those guys yet...matter of time? yeah there is winmx and edonkey, but I think ultimately, it will take a concentrated effort and decent participation(ie file sharing) from all users to really crank up gnutella into something truly beautiful.

Whatever...Napster, Scour, Morpheus, Kazaa...they all die and are all replaced by something else. Ashes to ashes and so forth....

This is terrible news! How are people going to pirate media a decade from now when all of the P2P programs are forcefully closed by the RIAA and lawyers?
