Great Whites will get you anywhere since they are found in all oceans.
BTW if you didn't know, the red triangle here in northern california is the biggest GW shark breeding ground in the western US. Not to mention, the Farallon Islands 27 miles out of SF are visited by the biggest Great White sharks ever seen to munch on elephant seals.

Not unrealistic though. I know someone who was followed by a great white shark when he was kayaking in the ocean. He basically freaked out and started paddling back to Tomalas bay where he started from. The shark followed him all the way to the mouth of the bay before turning back.

lake superior can be pretty rough, it did take down the edmund fitzgerald...
basically boils down to paddling in conditions that are tougher than their skill level.
