kaveri cpu only?

Been a bit out of the loop recently. Is it safe to assume there will be a cpu only version of kaveri, much like previous lineup had? If so, is there an estimated release date for those?

Would these be a good buy for a mini-itx build or is intel the way to go? I'm kind of wanting to go amd but wont do so if there are enough reasons not to, I also get the impression fm2+ socket may be around for a bit so slotting in a more powerful cpu a year or two down the road is a possibility. OC will be done regardless (air cooling). Will be paired with a 650ti boost and be used for some gaming, but mostly every day tasks and the odd more demanding task.

Kaveri offers nothing on the CPU side. You could just aswell use Richland. And Intel is far, far ahead with cheaper CPUs that uses less power.

I haven't seen any rumors about it. Might have to wait a month or two for them to accumulate enough bad gpu chips.
 
kaveri is a better buy if you plan on OCing it. also I am not sure if it will work but true audio support could be fun in a few upcoming games.

I think true audio is part of the GPU, so it would probably not work with the Kaveri "Athlon X4" (or Kaveri with the IGP turned off)!?
 
You cant OC kaveri enough to even remotely get near a Haswell i3. Not to mention extra cost with a better heatsink.

There is no incentive to buy Kaveri for its CPU performance. And even then, buy the cheaper Richland if you must cripple yourself to buy AMD.

dude cut the hyperbole, it is quite tiring. 2M Kaver CPU sans gpu would be TDP competitive with haswell i3, also intel is better for single threaded performance, this is a well known fact. In multithreaded scenarios, steamroller should be very competitive. Also there wont be any need for "premium" memory or motherboard.

I wanted to answer to this, but decided to let go obvious trolling.

A8-7600 3.3Ghz is 20% faster than often recommended athlon X4 740 3.2GHz and as fast as fx-4300 and a10-6800. Quite good for low end APU.

On top of that it has means to get better as the time passes - quite the opposite to what we are used to with hardware. HSA, TrueAudio and Mantle may improve performance by a big margin.

Here is the average performance across many titles, some of which are known for their single-threaded nature: Civ5, Total War: shogun, Starcarft 2, World of tanks, flight simulatorX and many more.

All in all, a good chip, but could be priced better 😉
 
Its anything but a good chip as you prove as well. Beaten by Pentium and even 2009 Phenom II. Hell, even the new 42$ Celerons compete CPU wise than Kaveri that cost up to 4x more.

Yes, a single benchmark is a great indicator of a chips capacity...
 
A8-7600 is the best Kaveri product in the lineup, hands down.

Best doesnt say much when we talk about Kaveri. And the A8 7600 is not to be seen for sales anywhere. Only the 7700 and 7850K. Both costing quite abit more than the 6800K.
 
Interesting discussion. Not really in market for the whole APU, and since there is really no word on CPU only chips kaveri isnt all that interesting, for me.

Already have a EVO 212 cooler at hand, and was planning on OCing. Its my understanding the 750k/760k hit 4.2-4.3 ghz relatively easily, and with some luck hopefully further. Would they still not be a competitive choice compared to an i3 since its not really OCable and more and more software is able to utilize more cores?

I realize its pure speculation at this point, but would carizzo likely improve cpu ipc?

Trying my best to find a reason to go amd. (not really a fanboy or anything just like the idea of supporting the underdog) 🙂

well for starters don't get sucked in the "next chip" hype, AMD is good at that, as for steamroller it is good if you can go to 4.4-4.6GHz very competitive there as for when we will see them w/o igp, I reckon it isn't too long from now.

Rarely expect next gen to blow current gen away, was more thinking about the current situation with how the FX series is on hold and what will happen with that. Suppose the chances of any cpus aimed at the performance segment running on fm2+ are rarely slim though.

Any insight on how well ASRock FM2A88X-ITX+ would handle OC? Are there any word on new fm2+ itx mobos now with the release of kaveri too?

Short answer: yes.

Long answer: all signs currently point to AMD having ceased any further development on stand-alone CPUs, opting to focus exclusively on APUs. So AMD's enthusiast processors for this generation will be using Kaveri, and as such will run on FM2+. AM3+ and the FX line are dead from a development standpoint; what you see now is all there ever will be.
 
AMD perhaps has some non-negligible volume of Kaveri chips which have GPUs that are too damaged to fit in any of their bins. I say this given how much of the die is dominated by GPU, and since the lower end bins (currently) don't disable that much of it.

But they'd sooner make bins with less GPU enabled than no GPU at all. I just don't see the market potential for such a thing. Those who aren't looking for much in the way of game performance would be stuck buying a low end discrete GPU. The total cost is going to be a lot higher than if they stuck with a CPU with IGP. Those who do care about gaming are probably not going to be eager to save a few dollars on a CPU with lower performance after putting down for a > $100 GPU.

Were there actually even CPU-only versions of Richland or Trinity? I know there were Athlon-ized version of Llano, or at least there were supposed to be. Yes, there was a CPU (salvaged) version of Richland. That was the Athlon X4 700 series, which disabled the GPU. They were cheap, though stock clockspeeds were below the higher end A10 APUs.

And I wouldn't be surprised if we eventually see a salvaged Kaveri. Kaveri can handle a damaged CU or two, but they have no way to handle a damaged ROP block, for example. So some small percentage of Kaveri chips will have unusable GPUs, which is how the Athlon X4 came about.

All this tested games(Civ, SCII, TW, WoT, FSX) are a REAL pain-in-the-ass for AMD CPU architectures. Gaming with APUs on other titles like PES, Crysis, Dirt, Dishonored, Tomb Raider, Battlefield/COD and other titles will probably show better results compared to the results intel's cpus get.

Kaveri A10-7850 hit 4,4Ghz easily. Even my FX-4100 hits 4,6Ghz without voltage increase. The extra Mhz you can get of a intel processor, you will get too of a AMD processor.

Surely. They need it. I want another 20% IPC, but who knows hoe good it will be?
