I don't get any strong feeling that he is gay. He doesn't set off my "gaydar"..

It's difficult to get any sense of what type of a person he really is, tho. He is very secretive about his personal life. That's why it seems so strange he would suddenly be babbling like a madman about Katie Holmes. I'd give him the benefit of the doubt, tho, I tend to think he is genuinely "in love" - hence the bizzaro behavior. If you want to talk about big name stars who are still in the closet, I've be looking towards say Kevin Spacey before I looked at Tom Cruise.
