Kaspersky problems....

OK...so the guys over on the kaspersky forums have not had a solution for this yet, and my problem has only gotten worse....(I'll reference the thread on their forums at the end)

I play some games, including CS:S/HL2:DM, Fear MP, BF series, and so on. Recently, when I'd updated to the latest version of Kaspersky Internet Security (KIS) I started having serious issues in any Souce (Valve) games (and only source games) - I'd get terrible lag spikes...a server 50 miles from me where I'd normally have a 20 ping or something, with the anti hacker part of KIS on, my ping would go to 20-30 low end, spike to 300-500 ms, I'd get massive choke, then its settle for a few seconds, and repeat. I set CS to the trusted zone, allowed all activity for it, and still got lag...

Now here's where it gets better: The guys on the Kaspersky forum told me to try out a version not yet released as official on the site, but said it was not a beta (and it wasn't - betas require a special access key and pass, this one used my access key.) I installed it, and first thing I get is...yipee! The proactive defense sees everything as riskware, saying it is trying to interefere with other processes...

Oy, this is why I don't recommend "Internet Security" suites of any sort. Too restrictive. IMO Kaskersky has really good AV software, but the KIS...

When it's added to the trusted zone you do you still get those annoying squawk warnings ?

Sorry OP , was reading the thread at Kaspersky. I do not seem to have the lag spikes in Source.

Well, the popups are gone. Time to test for the lag again...

What version do you run CrystalBay, and do you have KIS?

Despite all the positive reviews I read about Kaspersky AV, I've actually had a lot of trouble with both their Internet security suite & even more with the latest version of Zone Alarm security suite (which uses the Kaspersky AV engine) to the extent that when they expire I'm very unlikely to renew either one of them. Its not that Kaspersky isn't good at dectecting virus's, its that it seems to cause stability problems which become steadily worse the longer it runs for ... also I've had it get shut down on me a couple time recently in a similar fashion to my experience with Norton AV before I stopped using it.

The Internet security suites that have performed the best for me in terms of a combination of stability & security are Panda Internet security 2007 & Trend Micro Internet Security 2007 ... on my primary PC I've settled on Zone Alarm Pro firewall & NOD32 AV which perform flawlessly together.

Yeah, I may let my Kas expire too, that'll happen around december this year, and get Nod32 around then.

Only thing is that I've seen viruses get past Nod32 already....

And who knows which AV will be best for Vista, as I will probably be on that by December...

The best AV's for Vista are the sames ones that work in XP. IMHO the top 3 are Kaspersky, NOD32, and Avira.

As far as your Kaspersky IS security problems are concerned, it's painfully obvious that you have an isolated incident. It's no different than any other software issue. It appears that the Kaspersky forums were helpful, but in the end your problem was not solved. I'd uninstall and use the removal tool that Don linked you to on the Kaspersky forums, then download the latest version from Kaspersky.com under product updates. If I were you I would disable the firewall since your most likely behind a router anyhow.

Trend has an AV thats Vista-certified, Panda does as well & so does Kaspersky as well as several others ... it remains to be seen how effective they are in comparision to the versions for XP, however I think it likely the results will be similar. At the moment I'm using a copy of MS one-care live that I got for free when I purchased Vista & the firewall isn't bad but the AV is very poor with only an 82% unknown virus detection rate so I'm going to replace it shortly & would have already if there were a way to install the firewall by itself.

Short-term I'd go with the Avast free edition combined with the built-in Vista firewall until more tests of a Firewall/AV combo for Vista are completed.
