NOD32 and Kaspersky has been my top 2 choices for AV for the past couple years. Light-weight, high performance, and easy installation.

Decent deal - I've been trying to find a decent "Free" Kaspersky deal ever since the AOL thing happened. I gave up after I found AntiVir, and it should also be pointed out that Microsoft Security Essentials is rated "Advanced+" (Same category as Kaspersky) by av-comparatives and is absolutely free, no rebates required. It ranks just behind both NOD32 and Kaspersky in terms of prevention. Not bad for free eh?

Currently "unavailable" for shipping. crap
Correction I was able to get one on line.

I used Avira AntiVir for 2 years until I started having problems with the updater timing out on me. I decided to give MSE a try and I'm very pleased with it. Its interface is overly simplistic, it only updates manually and it seems to use quite a bit of memory, but otherwise it's non-intrusive, updates fine over dialup and runs great on older machines, whereas Kaspersky will choke a P4 to death.

good deal OP! will recommend to my friends. however, they are completely taken away by microsoft security essentials and how its totally free 🙂

I am very interested in MSE and how good it may or may not be. I'd love to hear people's experience with it. I have found Symantec Endpoint Protection is letting lots of thigs through on client's PCs.

Does it stop the Vundo?

I've been struggling with finding an AV for years that I was happy with. Tried Kaspersky many times in the past, but always found it to be a resource hog. I have heard the newer versions were supposed to be better, and AV comparitives listed Kaspersky as slowing the system down about as much as McAfee. So I got a 3-user license to Internet Security version at Fry's last week ($0 AR). That was a big mistake...

I have a Core I7 running at 3.6GHz with 8GB memory, Vista 64-bit. At first I didn't notice a problem running it for a day or two, but then I started doing some real work on my system and had to go running through folder after folder. I noticed about a 1/4 second+ delay each and every time I double clicked on a folder on my HD whether I had just been there or not. I thought it was just a weird memory issue so I rebooted... Still the delay... Okay, the only new thing on my system was Kaspersky, so I disabled all protection, firewalls, etc. Still the delay! Reboot with it disabled... Still the delay. Okay, I had had enough. Uninstall this hog, reboot, NO MORE DELAY.

Absurd. I fly through hundreds of folders when I'm doing web design or other projects and I can't stand to have some annoying and very noticeable delay with every click. I just cannot believe it still has the delay with protection disabled. Truly bad programming there.

I'm back on Avira free for now, but will probably buy the full license soon so I can have web protection.

As for Nod32, I had that several times in the past and it just could not detect trojans very well at all. Kaspersky and Avira usually found them, as did Malwarebytes, SpywareDoctor, and sometimes Adaware, but not Nod32. It is fast though.

For crying out loud

It updates automatically for me.

Really?

OK, after poking around I found the option to auto-update before a scheduled scan. Is that it? It has to be tied to a scheduled scan? Not that I really have a problem with that.

MSE does indeed update automatically, but completely invisible and in the background. In fact you will never see anything from MSE unless it finds a virus. Also, occasionally the icon will change color to let you know you haven't scanned in a while. It's a very basic and simple AV but it does the job and I like it.

Maybe you're confused because it's not popping up a window to let you know it's updating. But if you check the time and date on the Update tab, you'll see that it changes.

I probably didn't notice because I was too busy updating it manually. 😛

Anyway, I'm quite satisfied wth MSE. OTOH, you couldn't pay me to use Kaspersky again.
