Kashmir

The so-called 'indigenous freedom struggle' (in the context of Kashmir) theory advocated by hardline Muslim groups (and nations such as Pakistan), is such a load of b.s.

The following is but one link, that provides information to the contrary. More than 60% of the groups fighting in Kashmir are not ethnic Kashmiris at all, most are Pakistani (out of which a majority are most likely Punjabi i.e. non-Kashmiri), and the remaining are a mix of Afghans, chechens, chinese, and Arabs (as well as disillusioned/brainwashed 'others,' including but not limited to John Walker Lindh - who did fight in Kashmir). There are relatively small amounts of ethnic, indigenous Kashmiris who are militants, but, unfortunately they have been the victims of either brainwashing, and/or suffered in some way from the Indian armed forces (who imho do try their best to differentiate between terrorists and innocents, but have unfairly killed/and or imprisoned the wrong people before. Many of the Indian army people are Muslims, and most of the victims of terrorists in Kashmir are Muslim as well.. so those that bring the religious card into this make a weak argument).

I know this topic may not be as 'hot' as what is happening to Israel, but to those that are educated on the subject, they do know that the violence that occurs there is almost on par, if not equal to, what is happening in Israel. I think that ATOT members should know about this subject as well, as it is very relevant to what is currently going on in the worlds fight against terrorism. I also wanted to get some feedback from ATOT members to see what their perceptions are on this conflict, whether they know enough about it or not, and what has been told to them anecdotally and what is backed by facts and statistics.

It seems that many people on here seem to think that all these "freedom struggles/jihad" are solely a result of friction between religions. Well its safe to say that is not an accurate statement. In the case of Kashmir, at least, there are HUGE political motivations for these terrorists/mercenaries. Again, most of the victims there are Muslims, and most of the perpetrators of violence are NON-NATIVE Muslims. They are bent on dividing the people based on religion over there (India is a secular nation), and to some extent, they have suceeded. an example of this, is the 'forced' practice of Muslim women wearing veils, and groups of Kashmiris are now protesting against Indian rule there. India even gave the people of Kashmir a fair vote (and invited 3rd party, neutral Western media and analysts to observe who ALL came to the conclusion that the votes were fair) to see who the Kashmiris wish to govern them.

I have been surprised by what some of my middle eastern/arab friends think about the Kashmir issue. Apparently, many Pakistanis have been telling them that this is a freedom struggle. They have told them this is Jihad, and gone even as far as comparing it with what has happened in Israel (this can in no way be compared to Israel, where land was literally taken from the then current inhabitants. Kashmir has always been a part of India, first Hindu area, later dominated by a blend of Muslims, Hindus, and Buddhists). Today it is mostly Muslim, but the main reason for that is the other minorities had been driven out/murdered.

I was actually trying to show guys that harbor your view are misinformed. Your statement MAYBE valid in the case of Israel, but in Kashmir, its a completely different situation.

Again, the people they kill most are Kashmiris of the Islamic faith. Read the article. It was written by a Muslim, and the photo was even shot by a Muslim. The victims were Muslim as well. The militants? Most likely Pakistani.

Exactly who's freedom are they fighting for Chinese?

no..terrorists are terrorist. You can't just generalize one nationality to be terrorists.

I agree with that. I do not think the average Pakistani knows what is really going on in Kashmir. Thats what you get when you live in a government controlled by a military dictator.

I thought of Led Zep when I saw the title: lyrics.
edit:
Oh, main reason for replying was that I was born there but I'm certainly no terrorist. I also have a brother born in Libya, New York and California. Being an AF brat, I was born American even though it happened abroad. There are many terrorists from that region yes, but not everyone is.

good question, i really don't know, and in fact, i don't think i care. i would like them to stop fighting, but i know that's not going to happen. what do you propose to do about it SherEPunjab?

I think the average Pakistani knows wat is going on, they just don't care. I don't care anymore either. The fight will end once those in power die. My view is to cleanse the entire government of India and Pakistan (save for the good people such as Abdul Kalam, who is the President of India, and others) and have the younger generation ruling both countries. Why? Well for one, they don't harbour the anti-Pakistani/India views that the older generations have. A lot of my friends are pakistani (me being Indian) and we get along fine. We even make jokes about each other's countries in jest.

I dont' have the answer to that. Its a tough question, one that has been fought over for 13 years. I do, however, believe that in order to come to a solution, the violence perpetrated mainly by outsiders must be stopped.

Everyone would like people to stop fighting but people such as yourself have wrong perceptions of what is going on there. Even our government turns a blind eye to what Pakistan is doing. As good as our intelligence is, I'm sure we have evidence that links the ISI (Pakistan's intelligence agency, like CIA) to terror groups (including taliban, probably al qaeda as well). However, we need them right now so we are playing along for the time being.

One step, which is important on the way to solving this problem, is to remove every outsider from Kashmir. The problem is, thats akin to removing all illegal Mexican Immigrants from Texas... its very hard to do. Keep in mind India doesn't even have a way to account for almost every individual, unlike the U.S. does with its drivers licenses, ss cards, and birth certificates. next, we would need to bring back all the displaced people, over the last 30 years, back into Kashmir.

I support Kashmir's desire to be independant, just as they wanted to be when England split up the territory. The Indians promised to allow Kashmir to vote for their independance, but somehow, that was swept under the rug.

Both India and Pakistan need to keep their thug hands off of Kashmir.

all in the name of imperialism eh? that's so 1900s. as for what's going on in india, i think i had a good idea before i read the article. i think the atlantic charter speaks for itself, but then again that was before the rise (and fall) of communism.

I do care. most of my family is back in India, and that too 15 km south of J&K. Terrorists have struck there too. The younger generation that you speak of is what a lot of people say. That young blood needs to run the government. I agree it will be an improvement, but I can say that a lot of Pakistanis/Indians do harbor anti-other nation views. From personal experience, I've noticed differences depending on where the person is from. For example, Pakistanis that originally hailed from Gujurat are less (muslim-middleeastern whatever). Most of them speak Gujurati as their native tongue which is a sanskritic (indian) language. Punjabi Pakistanis are a different story. They tend to associate themselves more with middle easterners. They speak fluent urdu, not the crap that people speak in movies, but real urdu (lotsa arabic/farsi) that most hindi speakers couldn't understand. they also speak punjabi which is based on sanskrit but has a lot of persian influence as well. From my experience, many of them really don't like Indians. They dont' care for "mohajirs" either, nor do they seem to care much for Shiites. They are filled with hate in general.

And, all the thousands of displaced Kashmiri Pandits (Hindus) and Buddhists should be allowed to return.

And, btw, India did give a free vote, and even westerners can attest to that.

Imperialism? I don't think I suggested that...

Independant != Colony

I guess my experience is opposite yours. Most of my pakistani friends hail from the mountains and speak Punjabi & Urdu. They have no anti-Indian views and I have no anti-Pakistani views. I'm a hindu and speak gujurati (well I am guju, but I dont' like how Indian people say they are punjabi, guju, tamil, etc... they should say I am indian..but that rant is for another thread).

anyway im rambling, but this whole mess is political. When I said "they don't care" I meant they don't care which country Kashmir belongs too, not that they don't care that peoples lives' are lost. I don't see why Pakistan thinks Kashmir is theirs just because muslim people live there. There are more muslims in India than there are in Pakistan, so why don't they just invade India while they are at it?

Once the politcians who do this are gone, this will all end. Maybe India and Pakistan will become one country again. I would like that. Damn British seperated us and started this whole thing.

What do you think about Palestine? And I would appreciate it if you wouldn't call my motherland a thug nation :frown: The Indian Govt. is the representative of 1.1 Billion people and irrespective of which party is in power, the Indian people freely choose their destiny. We don't even let our Supreme Court decide who the Prime Minister is going to be 😉 To call India's actions as thuggery is akin to calling all 1.1 Billion of us thugs...and I don't take very kindly to being called a thug.

EDIT: Also, India agreed to the plebiscite on the condition that all foreign forces would vacate all of Kashmir so the vote would be fair and not influenced by Pakistani elements. Let Pakistan withdraw its forces from the LoC and India WILL hold the Plebiscite. BTW, India is not obligated to withdraw her forces from Kashmir - why? because India would be holding a plebiscite in its own territory (even if the end result means Kashmir might not longer remain Indian territory). What are your sources for information on the Kashmir issue anyway?!!!

he is obviously misinformed. There is plenty of that around ATOT! He didnt even know India recently had FAIR elections for the people of Kashmir. Fair, as reported by independent, 3rd party observers.

They had elections in October, but as far as I've known, there was no vote on independance.

Oh, and you mentioned "FAIR" elections?

BBC Link

Were the polls free and fair?

The elections were conducted fairly, but not freely, according to an independent team of observers.

Both India and Pakistan want Kashmir for their own selfish ends. IMHO, that makes them both thugs.

My opinion of thugs is furthered by India and Pakistan constantly threatening each other with nuclear weapons.

I'm not saying my country is perfect. I didn't agree with the Supreme Courts election of Bush. The difference is, when my county does something that isn't right, I'm not scared to be on the disenting side.

Is my country a thug? Sometimes. I think we're bullying Iraq right now (not that I am pro-Hussein in any way). It's just that we're not threatening to nuke another country...but that could happen any day with Bush in charge.

India wants Kashmir to be a part of India. They will always make enough excuses so a vote will not take place. And according to the agreement with the Maharaja, India should be holding a plebiscite.

When there are more Mexicans living in Texas in the year 2030 should they get a vote to see if Texas should become a part of Mexico?
