Kashmir crisis

Yesterday the region remained ?on a trigger?. George Fernandes, the Indian Defence Minister, told troops on a frontline position in Rajasthan that India had to give a ?strong reply? to last week?s killing of 34 people by Islamic militants near Jammu. Pakistan responded with a blunt warning of its own. Major General Rashid Qureshi, the government spokesman said: ?Any incursions into Pakistani territory or Azad (Pakistani-controlled) Kashmir will be responded to and met with full force.?

In the Kashmir capital of Srinagar, gunmen killed Abdul Ghani Lone, a Muslim leader who wanted to achieve independence through peaceful means. Colin Powell, the US Secretary of State, said he was saddened and angered by the killing. ?This was a terrorist act designed to undermine the hopes of the Kashmiri people for free and fair elections without violence.?

Looks like the barometer is heading up fast in the area again.

Seems very comparable to the Isreal vs palistine respectivly india as isreal and pakistan as palistine....

Except both are huge countries with nuclear capabilities.

I dont think eather would really use their nuclear capablities, i mean even a small nuke would end up effecting both of them very much in many ways. Plus everyone knows if one person launches one nuke the other is gonna follow and its gonna be a giant chain reaction, its kinda like the cold war, when 2 countries are armed with nukes at more then one base then its pretty pointless because within 20 minutes if they start firing at eachother both countries are toast.

For a comparison of potential destruction, think of a bar room brawl vs. WWII

Actually, both sides seem to be quite content to use nukes. That makes the danger all the more real. Remember, things that start off as a bluff can escalate out of hand before people get a grip. No I am afraid the threat is real.

I seriously still belive that nobody can be that stupid to use a nuke against another nuclear armed country...im 16 and im just one person, im sure the older wiser people in this world have to agree with me...come on?!?!?!

And for native americans? u mean like now? or way back then? and if back then would the settlers have them too?

I hope you are right, but I have faith in the infinite foolishness of humanity. Someone, please prove me wrong.

If Native Americans had access to the most potent weapons of mass destruction, would they use them? Just a thought.

Who would they use them on? If they used them against the settlers they would be ruining their own land, and if they use them against the Europeans they would face a retaliatory strike. What do Native Americans have to do with India and Pakistan anyway? 😕

Good question, Kilgor. I have been comtemplating that for a long time.
The who would they use them on or what does this have to do with India/Pakistan? 😛

Good point. But the US media doesn't seem to give a fvck about India/Pakistan. I don't know if it is becuase that neither hindus nor mulims have a powerful lobby/support in the US, but jews do. Interesting question.... I might see if I can get some extra credit if I do an essay on it. Jack up that International Relations grade. 😀

just want a chime in, there was a report last week about how pakistan nearly sent a nuke towards india during the kargil conflict. Though kargil was fought within the LOC pakistan was willing to send a nuke.. they almost did.. and guess who gave the orders.. General Musharaff.

I have a feeling pakistan will fire first, since they have said they dont give a damn about no first strike.

If Muslims don't, who's funding the Palestinian side of the story?

I think Muslims just don't care about the India-Pakistan conflict because there's no way to badmouth Israel in the process 😉

I believe this conflict will escalate to war, and within a relatively short time. And since India has the military ability to wipe the floor with Pakistan, Musharraf will probably fire a nuclear first strike (which he has shown a tendency to want to do).

I work with a number of Hindus, and respect the Hindu culture (even if it does not always make sense). I have zero respect for Islam, and in this situation I believe that Pakistan is deliberately pushing India as far as India can be pushed.

Don't bet on it. Pakistan damn near went nuclear last time they had a major flare up. They may not be as likely this time to step that far out since they have to know we would bitch slap them like a $20 whore. Who knows though? You really can't apply rational thought to a problem born out of the hatred the Kashmir conflict has.

Now, this is in no respect to the religion of Islam, but do Muslims just love fighting with everyone? It seems most problems going on in the world right now are involving Muslims. It doesn't seem like they can get along with anyone. I know that there are peaceful Muslims out there, and that they outweigh these extremists, but it seems that even Moderate Muslims share some of the sentiments as the extremists do.

Well the question here is how you would have bitch slapped the survivors of Hiroshima? Let's suppose your country has been hit with a nuke strike orders of magnitude above Hiroshima. You are one of the Pakistanis. Everything around you is either dead or dying. You too will be soon and you know it. Flesh hangs off your body, but because it was cauterized little bleeding occurs. You do not hurt as much as you might expect, because the nerve endings are gone. So are your eyes. Maybe you can hear, maybe. Radiation will finish you off before the dehydration sets in. Now, back here in the US, I am going to punish you how?

Edit. The above scenario reflects that it is likely that if things get carried away, they will stay that way this time. True, we could punish them, but still, why would they fear us if they do not fear the above?

The Times of India, an excellent India-centric source of news for the area.

BBC article regarding the Kargil conflict in 1999 when Pakistan was preparing to use nuclear weapons against India.

CNN article covering India Prime Minister Vajpayee's rallying the troops in Kashmir. Sounds ominous for the future.

It's all about saving face, about honor, about the truth of which of them is going to see first how bad they feel about themselves, about not letting the other guy being allowed to make them feel it. Naturally when you feel like the worst in the world and the other guy is telling you it's true, of course you will use nukes. The reason humanity is self destructing is because they don't want to know the truth. The truth is that everybody feels like the worst in the world, doesn't know it, and doesn't want to know it. The wonderful irony is that humanity will go extince because it doesn't want to know that this deepest hidden feeling is a lie. But while humanity is asleep, you might just be able to wake up.

What makes you say that both sides seem content to use the nukes? India is not a country that would use its nukes unless it REALLY REALLY had to...this brawl with Pakistan? It's occured before...and will continue to occur. You guys are blowing this out of proportion...as long as there are corrupt politicians, this war will never end. Both sides need something ot make them look good right? Well the best way is to make their neighbors look like enemies. It's like in Animal Farm, where the lead pig told all the animals that the humans are evil and the pig was popular because he claimed that he would help them become free and protect them...when he was just gaining his own popularity.

Also to the guys who said its because of the Islam religion...IT's NOT!! Thats what they want you to think!!

You guys do realize that there are more muslims living in India than in Pakistan?? And they are living happily and dis-approve of this war!
This is a war fought by politicians and rebels to further their own cause and satisfy their need for hatred against India and as well as spite. And I'm not only blaming Pakistan...those riots that occured in India, do you think they were really started by muslims against the hindus?? I'm sure it was riled up by some politician who wanted a riot that he could pacifiy to make him look good in the eyes of the public...which is what I said earlier.

A lot of you guys have no experience with what is going on in the area and are just regurgitating whatever CNN feeds you...live in the area, then talk.
