Karl Rove: McCain went 'too far' in ads

(CNN) -- Former Bush adviser Karl Rove said Sunday that Sen. John McCain had gone "one step too far" in some of his recent ads attacking Sen. Barack Obama.
Karl Rove said both candidates are guilty of going too far in their attacks.

Karl Rove said both candidates are guilty of going too far in their attacks.

Rove has leveled similar criticism against Obama.

"McCain has gone in some of his ads -- similarly gone one step too far," he told Fox News, "and sort of attributing to Obama things that are, you know, beyond the '100 percent truth' test."

The Obama campaign immediately leaped on the quote.

"In case anyone was still wondering whether John McCain is running the sleaziest, most dishonest campaign in history, today Karl Rove -- the man who held the previous record -- said McCain's ads have gone too far," said campaign spokesman Tommy Vietor, in a statement sent to reporters minutes after Rove's on-air comments. Rove masterminded both of President Bush's successful White House bids.

Rove said both candidates need to "be careful" about their attacks on each other.

"They ought to -- there ought to be an adult who says, 'Do we really need to go that far in this ad? Don't we make our point and won't we get broader acceptance and deny the opposition an opportunity to attack us if we don't include that one little last tweak in the ad?' " he said.

You have to sink pretty low for Karl "McCain's black baby" Rove to say you went too far.

You should see the video where Karl tries to explain it. Watch him stumble as his mind is thinking "gee, how can I possibly spin this?"

Hasn't the McCain campaign told him to hide under the bed and not show his face in public?

Karl Rove always has been (since he was in his 20's), and most likely always will be, a major pillar of the neocon sub-faction of Republicans. If you watch the RNC again you'll see him hanging out in the booth in the back and going over the script for that night. He was a brilliant strategist for his time in finding new ways to gather money for the Republicans, they were the first to initiate a computer controlled mailing list and machine controlled letter openers.

Don't get me wrong; Karl Rove is definitely one of the top minds of the neocons, it's just lately this election year he's been slipping up a little and getting busted for it.

The Daily Show puts a leftist spin on it but it's true they bust him spinning big time. Forward to about 9 minutes in that video.

I keep hearing people referring to Rove as some evil mastermind, yet pounce on this as some aberrant moment of truth coming from his lips. Personally, I think Rove is more disciplined than this to say it out loud. I remember reading someone else's post that said that once the negative ads from McCain have run their course and done their damage, McCain will call a truce, which of course will be reported heavily and show how classy he is. McCain will then admit he went too far and call a truce, while Obama will be ramping up his negative ads in response and come off as a jerk, thus garnering McCain more sympathy. Anyway, that's my take on it.

As for the ads going too far, personally I've become so desensitized by them over the years that while I support McCain and know in the back of my head that the ad is stretching the truth, I don't really care to feel disgusted. It's sort of like hearing Bush lied, people died! The more I hear it, the more desensitized I've become. All this saying, LIED! and I emphasize the loud outrage behind saying LIED! just makes me want to vote for McCain more just to spite them. All this complaining only helps pander to the left who already will vote for Obama. All this whining is going to do is turn off the right, because they see this as being wimpy.

The conservative blogs are already telling the McCain campaign to stop bringing up the lip stick charge since they see it as whining and thus wimpy. And playing the victim doesn't appeal to conservatives.

How does that negate what he said about McCain?
Your statement is beyond 0% logic test, on the wrong side.

/sarcasm on

God dammit John McCain was a PoW and a war hero. He deserves our respect as well as

- a 27 year seat in the Senate
- a pass on picking the worst VP in the nation's history
- a pass on his marital infidelity
- a pass on his immigration flip flop
- a pass on lying to us about Iraq
- a pass on an economic plan that hinges on finding billions in "inefficiencies" of which he can never seem to name even one
- a pass on his fear mongering, lie filled ads of which Karl Rove even admits is over the line
- a pass on his claims to support renewable energies despite not having a single damn incentive for them in any of his plans
- a pass for graduating 894th out of 899 students from his naval academy
- a pass for his flip/flop and politically opportune pander on offshore drilling (and soon ANWR)
- a pass for his bad comb over
- a pass for pandering for the endorsement of hate mongering religious leaders despite calling them "agents of intolerance" just a few years before
- a pass on filling his campaign and if given the chance his presidential cabinet with lobbyists despite constantly saying they are the problem with Washington
- a free ticket to the presidency

and anything else he asks from us.

All you haters need to worry about is saying thank you for your service President McCain.

/sarcasm off

In a silly season where lip stick on a pig is a dominant theme for both sides, the mere idea that the ultimate pig himself, Karl Rove, can seek to redeem himself by suggesting McCain went too far misses the whole point. There is not enough lipstick in the universe to cover up the record of Karl Rove.

The fact that McCain has crawled into bed with Karl is the point we must take away, even though Karl is now claiming to be offended as as he too buggers McCain. Spare us their claims of non copulation as Karl claims McCain is a lousy lay and an even worse liar.

Right on. Karl Rove invented the dirty little game and used it on McCain and others, proving that he could lead even an idiot who can barely speak English to victory over a POW war hero "maverick". And now he's going to criticize McCain for playing it?

Would somebody please tell this flabby douchebag that he resigned and so should just STFU? He's exactly the sort of filthy hog I don't want to see in American politics anymore.

Wow. That Tucker fella is smooth.

I won't be surprised at all if Tucker gets canned. He spins so hard that he's forgot what the truth even was to begin with.

He showed what a true professional spinner looks like

It was astonishing to see him try and work it.

too bad the Fox lady wasn't going to let him get away with it.

I have no idea why McCain and Co feels the need to lie or even stretch the truth.

There is so much negative stuff out there that is truthful that they would never run out of material.

Forget the sex ed for kindergarten and instead talk about Obama and the infanticide bill. Obama has NO defense on that bill. He has already admitted that the bill he opposed was almost exactly the same as the federal bill that he claims to have supported.

Go after him over Tony Rezko and all the money Obama helped to funnel to him. Or Obama's chairmanship of that school project that spent $50 million on the Chicago schools and produced no improvement. Or his work with Bill Ayers on the Chicago juvenile justice system and Obama's overall weak record on crime control.

There is a long list of Obama embracing liberal ideas and then having those ideas turn out to be failures. Stick to the truth, but hammer Obama with it.

I have a theory: he played the game his own way until Rove dragged him into the filth and beat him, and now he thinks thats what you have to do to win...or maybe his advisors have convinced him of it. The problem is, thats why I always liked the guy: he was the only politician who put his money where his mouth is at great risk to his own life, and he wasn't like "them". So when I watched the convention, I was sad and disgusted at the same time. Its nice that he made a point of saying how he respected Obama and how they shared the most important link possible, they were both Americans, etc...but it rang hollow after several days of every single speaker doing nothing but attacking and smearing, including Arctic Barbie.

Anyway, I agree with your post, and that's exactly what he should do.

EDIT: Wow, I just agreed with both Lemon Law AND Prof John in a single thread! Do I get some kind of award? 😎

Hey, when you're right, you're right. He's a great man, but he's letting his party drag him down.

Anyway, did you notice that Palin seemed to give two separate speeches at the convention? The first was about her life and career, and I liked it and I liked her. The second was all attacks and smears, and it seemed obvious that they'd told her what to say. The next morning, I read that she arrived with her own speech, but some Bush speech writer had "fixed" it. Then I saw her repeat the same attack crap in the next few appearances, until she flew back home, where she gave a nice speech about Alaska, what it meant to her, etc., and again I found myself liking her.

Moral of the story: the Bush/Rove dirty politics are exactly the crap we want CHANGE from, and rather than join the Dark Side, these two should just be themselves. I think they'd have a much better chance.

No offense, but I like puppies and pie, and I think you are exhibiting terribly superficial things to judge a candidate on. Of course she has her inspirational stuff.
